developments to her capabilities. •
Philadelphia is now making efforts to put her
self or; the hest possible footing; and the passage
of this Consolidation bill and the achievement of
some ' new internal improvements will be smile
the subject of a-grand celebration en the 25th of

by Means of the tunnel just completed. This is
a very important matter for our neighbors.—
Among the local improvements may be mention
el a bill passed to remove the old markets which
disfigure and destroy the chief value of High St.,
which was intended by William Penn as the great
thomoghfare east and west. A park on Broad
St., which street cuts the City north and south
in the centre, has bets conditionally purchased.
Broad St. is. about fifteen miles lobg, and is one
of :the grandest avenues in the world. It runs
in a straight line, and its great width admits of
being planted withXrees, and adorned with pal

from Philadelphia 'will give her the shortest

will be shorter to pass from Cleveland, Chicago, ,
and sti forth, to New York, than by any other I
route. The Pennsylvania Central Railroad to
Pittsburgh has flips far cost sixteen millions.—
It has paid unfinished, from the start, sip per

millions. The other roads are also profitable.—
The antliratite, trado last year was five million

The history of Philadelphia shaves that it is int.

The entire history of Philadelphia is curious.
At One time she was the great City of,the Union, I
and the acumen of her black-letter lawyers piste

land. The first Continental Congress, out of
which grew the thunders of the Revolution, as

stepped forward and subscribed fourteen thou

enabled Washington to keep his troops together. I

kept back the institution of a Common School

All that was-wanted to-secure to Pennsylvania
and home to her chief city the Most de'airable

ignorance of her interior population and 'imbue-
Nut democracy prevented it. Fifty thousand,

Van Buren, - the only exceptions to a stolid presi

its full carrying' desolation through --the commu

Pennsylvania now holds a prominent place
among the manufacturing States of the tinion.--
Her cotton and woolen manufactories, oecoitling
