Correspondence or the Pltteburgh DOT th.ett.
WAHHIFCTON, Feb. 10, 1564.
John Van Buren doeS:not confine his expres
sions of indignant contOmpt on the course of af
, fairs at Washington to oral dentumiatitm of the
President and Senator Denglass, and their ser
vile followers. He has written to his friendi
here that he desphies and reprobates their con
duct as statesmen, and scorns their infamous re
pudiation of the obligations of honorable men.
I have seen this protest under his own' hand.--
There has bean an important correspondence
between him and lion. Jeremiah Clemens, Ex-
Senator froth Alabama, honorable to both of
Them. The reply of Mr. Clemens is published,
of course by his consent, . and shows him Op
posed, though an ultra Southern man, to the
contemplated Nebraska outrage. As a man of
honor he could entertain no other opinion of it.
Thisis not the first time in our history that the
public service has-been invested by scoundrels
in principle and felons in practice, but they have
not obtruded themselves into Congress, and
claimed control and rule in its councils, and pre
sumed. to dictate the 'national policy. In the
dreary days of the second term of Jacksonism i
and the reign of Van Buren, legions of pecula
tors and swindlers swarmed in all parts of the
Administration, but when they had cheated and
robbed the Government to the extent of their
several opportunities, they had the decency to

than Wild and *hit° opher Blifil blush to the
ears, mid denounce with the ribald insolence of
Ss. Gilds, aWwlto opposed them. Yet this •is
exactlyi the . , spectacle now presented. Mr.
Chase, Mr. Sumner, and tolday Mr. Smith, have
been assailed by epithets and treatment which
show that blackguards in manners as well as
111 Melleaths in principle have_obtained control of
. .
thatiliody. 1
~. Mr. SMith's speech to-day' was a thorough .
exposure of the tendencies and objects of the
Nebraska hilL It was a bolder and fat more
effective speech than Mr. Everett's on Wednes-
I day, and VI produce a more lively impression
on the country.
I It is said that the Gadsden Treaty with Mew

amendments providing for the purchase of a
large quantity of land, including Lower Cali-

Waßnutotos, Feb. 'II, 1864
We have reached the end of another week, and
the horizon seems not altogether So lowering and
lurid, as at the close of the preceding, one.—
Then the Illinois Leviathan, the mighty Tom
Thumb of slaroryl, tras only induced inl the pleni
tude of his forbearance to postpone the con
clusive and triumphant vote upon his Nebraska
scheme, out of a contemptuous pity for his an
tagonists. Now it appears that the discussion.
has but fairly begun, and so far srom granting a
reprieve to his trembling. adversaries, the cham
pion of the South finds himself unable to keep
the Senate' in session to hasten and facilitate the
triumph ocher cause. * The motion to adjourn
over to 'ltipiday, was carried yesterday, almost
without (Tendon.

';'he•olltuisclen treaty with Mexico, was sent in
today, after many false alarms. It has been
tinkered and patched up bycabinet amendments,
,so that, its is-said, it authors hardly know their
own work. It was read and ordered to be midak
ed, With the alterations it will probably be COT
firmed, though that is by no means certain.
The Senate has effected a considerable amount
of executive business this week. Most of the
diplomatic nominations pending, have been dis
posed of by confirmation; though the contested
C3SCS have not come on. I believe the report is
unfounded that either one of the nominations of
Belmont as Minister to Holland, Saunders as
Consul, or Dan. Sickles as Secretary of Legation
to London, has been confirmed, and I do not be
':ieve that they w 41.. The case which has excited
most discussion and opposition is that of John
O'Sulliran, nominalist Charge to Portugal,
in place of 3lr.'lladdoek. • Mr. O'Sullivan, is
personally ono of the most capable and I,specta
ble men nominated by Pierce—but he has been
conspicuous as a Cuban filibuster, and is said
to have been instrumental in getting up' the two
cast expeditions, one 'of which resulted so disas
trously for those engaged . in it. His nomination
is still hung up to dry.
We shall have an animated and interestingdis
eussion next week over the Rom .d bill.

were totally detroyed, with allthe cargoes they
