FROM WAMIIINGTON
Corverpondemat of the Dalt, Pitteburgh Gazette
IVAsuprorom, PA.B, 1,854
• The abominations - of the Nebraska bill have
actually alakeneil um, and for the last two-days,
I have beer, hardly able to hold a pen. I may
say with the hymnist, •
81.13 rondwed
And I died.
But while wickedness bearer unrestricted away, I
seem to be getting better, and am again able to,
raise my voice in denunciation of the iniquity.—
The wires do not work with that perfect facility,
which was expected and yesterday no progress
.was mule in the debate. Mr. Douglass; however,
was enabled to bring in his fifth or sixth modifi
cation, which is nothing , : more nor less than 'a
cunningly compounded mince to make the mess
less unpalatable to the Soft Shell Democrats,
who are seeking for an excuse to go for the bill.
Douglass has now dropped the phrases .Imper-_,
ceded" and "inoperative," which in his tamer
'proles:a were mere glaring pretences, and now
adopts the more deceptive expression of "incnn
eietent with" and therefore ''null and void." Ile
also.eayethe intention of the act is not to vast,.
Usk nor . legislate slavery into Nebraska norrto
exclude It therefrom, but to leave the queetion
to the decision 'of the people. Of course this is
all chaff to catch the runaways or to afford scor
ner for the retreat of the cowardly. The repeal
of the Missouri CoMpromise remains, as in all
other forms of the scheme, and that is the gist
of the whole matter.
Mr. Everett's speech to-day was a beautiful
and pleasing production, but I thought it treated
the subject in too courtly a manner, and in par
ticular paid too much respect to 'the lying pre
tences on which Douglass and Dixon base at
tempted to defend this project. It is true that
i
Mr. Serett exposed and mph:sled the miserable
sop ' s of Douglass; but why consider them in
the l t of argitmente worthy of refutation! It
is Ito 'ng to,them a consequence and a res
pectability which they do not poasesa. The
weather was very bad, but Mr. Everett bad as
large an audience as could get within sound of
bis roice. Truman Smith. of Ct., has the floor
forto-morrow, and will no doubt give us a hcon
ilywelltsdapted to the emergency.
