to his intention, saying, •for God's sake, Cap

off where they are than they would be aboard
here: beside, if I should go alongside,- they

APAN.—"Hunt's Aferchants' Magazine" • for
January opens with, an article on Japan, "with
reference to the commercial and political rela
tions of that nation with the rest of the world."
The writer, W. J. A. Bradford, gives an interest
ing summary of the principal facts 'respecting
the Japanese to be found in the works of Charle
voix, Diebold, Koempfer, McFarlane, and other
authors, and comes to the conclusion that the
trade with Japan does not promise great results:"
He says that "the Dutch factory found it rather a
losing .business, and were glad to give up- the
largest part of it to the Government."

ADVANCk of PRICE OF PERMIAN GOANO.—In
consequence of the increased rate of freights de
manded by vessels in the Pacific, Messrs. Barre
d& ti; Brother, agents of the Peruvian govern
ment here, have received instructions to advance
the price of Guano from $46,20 to $6O per ton,
which rate is now demanded for all consigned to
them from the Chincha Islands.—The agents,
hereafter, will not sell less than fifty tons, so that
the general sale of the article will be by the com
mission merchants and regular dealers.—Bcdt.

Tun Itsuir MOTHS.—From the Auditor Gen
eral's Annual Report we glean the following facts
relative to the foul and rugged "Relief Notes,"
which still disgrace the currency of our State:
Original amount issued $3,243,015
Amount redeemed
2,182,837
Amount re-issued, and in circulation 475,639
Of the original amount put in circulation, the
Farmers' Bank of Reading issued $60,072 and
the late Berko County Bank, $45,787. Of the
Farmers' Bank issues $56,669 have been redeem
ed, leaving $3,403 yet in circulation. The whole
of the regular issue of the Berks County Bank
has been redeemed. But this Bank made an
over-issue of $28,501, for the redemption 'of
which the State became responsible, and has re
deemed the sum of $27,408, leaving $1,093 in
circulation. It is probable that the most of them'
have been destroyed by the "wear and tear". to
which they were subjected, and therefore' will
never come home for redemption.—tiorrireetra
