We had another Debate on Slavery in the
'Rouse, which seemed to elicit no little feel
ing. Mr. Gilbert Dean, a leaser Democratic lu
minary in:the New York Lamy, delivered him
self of certain very harmless opinions on. the
Roasts case, to oppoeitlon to those enunciated
;eaten* by Gerrit Smith. Mr. Giddings then
ennobled the floor, and laid bare the revolting
history of the Buie and Ideates oleim for the
&Meted negroes, which the President venom
mends to Abe paid. In the course of his remarks
he stigmatised the foreign and domestic slave
trade in terms of just Indignation. It may
not be generally remembered theta& ewes is a
claim urged by the Spanish Government on be
half of two slave traders for $50,000, with in
tenet. • The negroes of the schooner Amistad
were captured by a U. 8. Revenue Cutter, and
wore llberated. by the United States District
Court of Connecticut. They had been imported
into Cabs in defiance of laws and treaties which
'make the slave trade piracy. They were enti
tled to their freedom by the laws of Spain, and
by international law. The persons who bought
them out of the shim ship undertook to trans
port them from one place in Cuba to another by
ENC.' 'They rose upon their kidnappers, slew
'some of them, and drifted about the ocean until
pickal up by the American vessel. After their
liberation and return to Jiffies, the slate dealers
brought forward a claim for Indemnity. They
were pirates, and by law were liable to be pun
felted as such., Under the British government
they would have been, happy in getting off with
Undislocated necks. But knowing the power of
the slavery element in our free and enlighteged
Republic, they have pressed their claim, and es.
cry succeeding Democratic Ariminlitentlon has
irged its payment. It was a pet measure sith

• Tor the Pltteburgh Gazette.
Fiala Warm—l noticed an article in one
of the Cleveland papers, of the 22d, chit appear
ed to be editorial, on the sabjeet of the
ties at Erie, the writer of which is either igno
rant of the subject or dishonest. He avows
there was; a bargain or contemn made between
the Legislatures of Ohio and Penneyhrania in re
gard to certain privileges granted to Railroad
Companies, which is not Garnet. In the Autumn
of 1846 the cilium of Ohio applied to their
Logisistare for • charter to build a road from
the State Line of Pennsylvania to the interior of
;Ohio, and the gentlemen interested in end iden
tified with roads running to the Lake, end con •
sleeting with the Northern imprOvenctitheiPPos
ed the application in a, way' that the Legislature
refaced to grant said charter. In the Autumn
of 1847 the citizens of Ohio circulated petitiona
and thousands 'of petitioners appealed to the
Legislature for a Charter to build a Railroad
' from the town of Mansfield in Ohio, to the State
line of Pensylvania, with the intention to con
nect with any road that should be extended West
from Pittsburgh to the State hoe of Ohio, and
great exertion and powerful influence wereagain
used by the Northern interests to prevent the
bill passing she Legislature of Ohio; but the nu
merous petitioners and influence was too great
for the Legislature to refine the privilege.—
And so soon as they found a charter would be
obtained, an attempt was made to add to the bill
so many provisions and contingencies as to de
feat the (Admit, (hence North Georgetown op
pears so many-times in said bill,) and publica
tions (emulated asserting that no road could be
built-on the propoeed route, and that there
would be no bueincia except carrying butter and
chorea if made, and sundry' other statements
equally untrue;wldch time has fully developed.
The whole enterprise wan taken up in Ohio by
her Own chimes, and carried through by the
friends of the Ohlo and Pennsylvania Railroad
without any bargain or contract in any way with
the citizens of Pennsylvania or its Legislature.
The friends of the enterprise determined to hold
a, convention to compare views on the subject,
and Massillon with proposed as the place. A
personal Invitation was given to certain ge)de,
men of Philadelphia connected with the Peen
ruins!' road, to attend at Massillon in order
to become identified, if possible, with that Com
pia, in some way; either for them to extend
their road to .the State line, oi to extend the
Ohio road to Pittsburgh. All this wait done by .
citizens of Ohio without any bargain, sale, or
agreement between the two Legislative bodies:—
As soon as the bill passed the Legislature of
Ohio, the friends of the enterprise caused a copy
to be forwarded immediately to the Legislature
of Penneylvaila, for the privilege to extend the
road to the ICity of Pittsburgh, should it be
deemed expedient by the Comp/by. ' And the
Legislature of Pennsylvania took ouch action as
was deemed advisable by the friends of the road.
Any imputation of "a bargain between the two
Legislative bodies, 'or the friends of the Ohio
and Pennsylvania, or Pennsylvania Central Road
with the Northern lines, is not true; or, that
the Ohio and Pennsylvaniai road has at any
time, either directly or indirectly, had anything
to do with the difficulty in Erie; the road having
folly shown its stockholders, friends, and the
public that it. needed no connivance with any
company, or the Interference with any rival line.
It is entinsly independent and asks no favors
of the Northern combinations. The West end
Northwestern men are sow fully satisfied of the
Importance of an immediate coons:Soo with the
Ohlo an the Pennsylvaniaroad, to reach the
Atlantic' eines; andoherefore, do not have to
resort to any underhanded or contemptible
132011.111ree to have a large and inoreaaing trade
and travel over the road, being independent,
and in no way fear the frown or itifirienoe of
their rivets. A Nana BIROCITII.
