Mr. Wright, of Pennsylvania, said he thought
the eoustry at large unprepared to anticipate
the reenlist which had been tenured from the de

believed that after the great contest the country
had palmed through, when both of the great par
ties of the nation came together in honorable
warfare, and when the great battle had been
fought and • the victory won, that abolitionism
was not only dead but buried. He then alluded
to Gerrit( Smith's speech which ho said exhum
ed the lifeleee body and dragged it before the
country. He said he could not keep hie month
clotted when each sentiments were avowed, and
he then reviewed Mr. Smith's speech, particu

He also defended the adminietration and the

He quoted the provisions of the Canstitutlon in
regard to the recovery of fugitivee from labor,
and asked how eon the gentleman put hie hand
on the Holy Evangelists and ewear to support
the Constitution?
Mr. Smith answered that a few days before
the Convention which framed the Constitution
adjourned, the Committee on Btyie recommend
ed that the word .'service" be eubatituted for
" , servitude," as the latter was Identified with
slavery and the former was identified with the
condition of freemen. The recommeodation was
