    lIIIITALYPIT OP STIDOZ HAMPTON.
,The District , Court Room was crowded at the
„bear of gpsaing yesterday by members of the
Mar and altlzens who bad assembled to witness
the ceremony of installing the Hon. Hoene
Hannon, as President Jodge of the Dietrict
Court in mod for Allegheny County.
. Bow. CAIIPBILL, Esq,, the Prothonotary, alter
proclamation made, read. the commierion
from Governor Bigler. Tho commission rune for
the term of ten years, dating from the trot Mow
day in Deoember.
Judge Swazir and the Hon. A. W. Loon's,
then oosdnated the Judge elect to his teat on the
Bench, when the oath wag administered to him
by the Prothonotary , .
Upon taking his seat, lodge 13baler, in a very
neat and elegant manner offered his pincer° oon
gratulaticits, both for himself and his brethren,
to hie Honor, upon his acoeselon to that seat, to
*blob he•was called by the voice of the people.
He proceeded to speak of the esteem he had
earned for hlmattlf during a long series of years,
as a member of the bar, and be felt sure that the
harmony that had always subeleted between finis
would be undisturbed • •
In conclusion he paid high compliments to the
ability, promptness and attention to the duties of
bis offme, displayed by . the retiring Judge, Hoe
P. 0. Blistmon. He curried with him from the
Buck the unmet wishes of all, that hie future
may be as suceessful as his coarse as President
Judge bad been. He concluded by reiterating
expressions of esteem and ecogrktalation upon
Judge Hampton's tweession.
Judge Hatorow remarked briefly that he
eould only say In reply to the unexpected and
highly complimentary address of his venerable
brother, on behalf of himself and the members
of the bar, that be returned hie heartfelt thanks
LI addition ha would state, that he had jut glv.
en a solemn promise before them and before God,
that he would discharge every duty of his office
to which he had jut been elevated, with fidelity,
impartiality and to the beet of his ability, and he
did not intend to depart from the obligations of
the oath.
The Hon. A. W. Lamm, at the conolusion of
the above remarks, addnased Judge Hampton
Si follows:
•
"It le more ,natural forme to eulogies the
dead than commend the living • I heartily con.
our in all, that has, been eo well and so tappily
said by my brother Sheer. I have only to add
' the expression of a ODOM) hope that your ad.
-ministration of theduties of the high and honor
able position to which you have been celled, may
be as eneetesful as your election. m acceptable.
Your predecessor has discharged these duties
with extraordinary promptitude and eminent
ability. His courtesy mid the uniform Mad &M
-in that his 'existed, during his brief admlnletra.
' tion, between the bench and the bar, have ren
dered the dhsoliarp of our respective duties
pleasant and agreeable. He returns to his pro.
females with the kindest wishes of his Brethren
for his future prosperity and happiness."
Judge tipanuoa, in retlrlog from the Ben oh, and
in reply, said he was most unexpectedly ailed
upon to make some reply to the kind and com
plimentary terms employed towardi hinself by
the venerable gentleman who bad just addressed
the CAM eulogy from tongues like theirs war
an honored which he was justly sensible, and of
which Indeed any man might be allowed to feel
proud. It, however, created an embarrassment,
which was heightened by the consideration of
hie inability suitably to express his profound
gratitude--a feeling which should dwell with him
to the gn~e.
Prom the arse to the lest of his judioial career,
his Intercourse with the gentlemen of the Bs:
had been of the most agreeable • nature, un
marred by an)ithleg huing's tandeocy to create
asperity or unkindneu. Hugh uniform courtesy
end at-operation from old and young—from
gentlemen whose characters and abilities would
grnee and adorn the Bar of v i py court—were
alone even in the absence. of words a standing
• tribute of regard, which could never be forgotten
by en sppreoisiing heart.
. He said he heartily weloomsd Haney imam
' bent to his seat upon the bench. The voice of
the majority of the people called him there, and
no °Him of correct thought or well balaneed
mind ought to feel an y regrets when the will of
the people had (as IlOwsys must) expressed a
-preference for one beyond another. The will of
the people Is the great lever of our Institutions,
and although oftentimes expressed through po
litical arse:dose:to, yet it must always be looked
upon 04 tbs safest anchor of Republican' hopes.
.• _ Before concluding he spoke in the meet honor
able and epprobatory language of his associate,
Judge Williams.
/a reply to the remarks of Judge Shannon,
Judge Williams said he would bear willing testi
mony to the : fidelity of Judge Shannon in the
disabuse of his duties. The intercourse be
tween them had hien of the most pleasant char
acter, and rattly if ever, was there a difference
of opinion between them. If any, ithad neva
terrapted thejkannony of their fsiendship.
Judge Hampton then received the personal eon.
'grattdstioni of Judges Shannon end Williams.
The Court proceeded to the, regular business
' of the day.
