We are now within a few days of the opening
of Congress, and the thanes about the city are
much like those of former Jesse, on the eve of
that great event. The number of candidates
for Speaker are somewhat greater than usual,
and the competition it preportionably lively.—
The caucus of the dominant party will be held
on Friday evening, bat if there be any difficulty
in settling upon candidates,. • second mooting
will be held on Saturday evening. About half
dozen aspirant" to thEablef poet of honor are
here, and actually engaged In the canvass.—

•I do not believe, from what I can learn, that

inee of the caucus. Bayly, of Virgiele, will
probably run as an independent or voltmteer
candidate, and may concentrate upon himeelf

all the disaffeeted Democratic Hard& That,
however, will not bring him within sight of I

The President has calmed to be *mounted
hiongh his private Secretary, Sidney Webster,
that the influence of the Executive will be
thrown for none of the candidates, nor against
eny one of them.
If a Southern men be chosen speaker, which
seems almost inevitable; Forney will be elected
Clerk. Bet if, by accident, Disney, or any oth
er Northern member enootedsin the straggle. the

who presents himself will be chosen. •
Gen. Armstrong, of the Dalon, is-almost oar
lain to be elected public printer, though Rives of
the Globe and Beverly Tucker of the Sentinel.

quarter of a million of dollars. It liberal, pos

Mr. Beriton says that this question, and that of
the Pacific railroad, will be the only ones worthy

solved to prevent the organisation of a territori
al government for Nebraska, until he can pincers

ing provision of which precludes the existence of

We are willing to bide our time, and for the

their own shape, without our motive interference,

The sympathies of the American people are all
on the tide of the Turks, in the War now raging
on the Danube. The Philadelphia Boils& saye
that the news of the Turkish suotesses, brought
by the Atlantic, threw the whole city into aetate

The notes of the Patohin Bank of Beitfalo are

that our friend• Baste, of the State Joornal, has
been unfortunate in hie business operations, and

itor, by the assignees, until final disposition is
made of the establishment. He had milieounl
ary interest in the establishment: he and Mr.

a money making establishment- Mr. B. ought
not to have been conneoted with the newspaper
department, or any party enterprise. At the
head of a good job office, he would do well. He
has warm friends, who will aid him, to launch
his bark on a more prosperous .current. At
least, such is one hope —Akron Beacon.
From the Sandwich Islands our advioes are to
the Bth October, ultimo. A. calm seems to hue
followed the Ministerial storm. The new Gov
ontment was moving on quietly. The question
of annexation still engages general attention.
The smalipox bad not ceased its ravages.
By the way of the Sandwich Islands we have
later news frot Tahiti, Society Islands. The
natives in the neighborhood of Balite' were en
