This worthy and h'onest representative of Al

the coarsest sad most unscrupulous oppoisition
from the Locafooo press, and leaders. This is
the rinrard which Loootoccirm beaten's on hon-

A gentleman from another county In this State,
who served in the Senate with Dr. Carothers,
waited on us the other day, and spoke of him

All the charges spinet Dr. Carothers gr

The publication of the report of a "Barmy of
a proposed route for the Pittsburgh and Connels
ville Railroad," made by Wm. B. Smith, Civil
Engineer, to Francis Thomas,Eß., President
of the Montalto Mining Company, appears to
hale given rise to misconceptions' in relation to
the Pittsburgh and Conneltsville Railroad Com

urn. - Able and fully qualified corps of Goghs
eers are now upon the route, and with the re•
salt of their investigations before them, the
Board of Diiectors will be able to decide which,
of the several lines profs:wed, will be tho most
desirable. Prom Myers' Mill, a point which SY
common consent, it seems the road will us p be
fore crossing the mountains, two routes are pro

port • of Mr. Smith above referred to. by which
the Connelloville road will debouch at Piedmont,
and thence pursue Oa Baltimore and Ohio Rail

rectly to Cumberland, entering it by the valley
of Wilt; Creek. •
Both these routes have their friends. The
Piedmont - route, being premed by parties inter
rated in the oral lands whin' the road would in
tersect, whilst the other route toss the general
voice in its favor, and, as fares publiclyappears,
has been almost- uninnally . regarded as the
route. which will be finally soisoptod. 'So far as
the Pittsburgh and Connallsvilleßalirosd is con
cerned it has acted officially on neither route,
but the tona.of the Pittsburgh press, which may
be presumed to represent the - op inions! of the
friends of the work there, has boon uniformly
1 in favor of the direst route to Cumberland.
The Alexandria, Loudon and Hampshire
' Railroad, whioh Mr. Smith, in his report, speaks
of as the continuation of the Pittsburgh and
Connellsvileindlnad, to tide water at Atexsn- 1
dria, is a road chartered by the 'Virginia Lee's-
lawn at its last session, and in the completion
of which, its friends look for; the aid of -New
York capitalists. Baltimore will not be called

Sputa is now in confinement in the French

nitentew with him. An old gray-beaded Turk,
who stood guard at the entrance, produced a key
most ponderous in size from his highly orna

ed us to, ht. Koesta's apartment.
HL confinement is at present by no means
rigorous. The walla of hie room are of stone,
and his windows are covered with an irn grat
ing. These are the only signs which indionte
that his liberty is restrained. His room is too
feet agnate, and contains a sofa, or more proper.
ly a Turkish divan, coarsely covered, bat very.
comfortable nevertheless: several chairs, two ta

. Id. Koesta reeeived ns very cordially, and en
tertained us for an hone or more in reciting the
events connected with his capture, and the part
he took in the late , Hungarian revolution. He
held the rank of captain in the Hungarian army,
and was under the immediate command of Gen
Bun, and be told me he had been in active ser

The Austrians here feel very sore toward all
Americans, in that their prey was wrested from
them in so summary a manner, and since the
Kouta affair they have added three vessels of
