DISIET CI Commute—The Placerville Herald,
of the 20th, contains a letter from a correspond
ent at Ban Bernardino, in that Stets, giving en
aocount of the discovery - of - a truncated pyramid
on' the great American desert, some 200 mitre
north-west at the junction at the MIA with the
Celoud°. The discovery is said to have been
made by a party of flee adventurers who attempt
ed to cues the desert in search of is shorter
route than that now known. The writer ISMS :
"An object appeared upon the plain to the
west, having so much the appearance of a work
of art, from the regultrity , of its outline audits
isolated position, that th e party determined upon
visiting it. Pas sing over an almost barna Band
plain,:a:distance of nearly five cages, they nub
ed the .base of one of the most wonderful objects,
considering its locatioa, (it being the eery nome
of desolation) that the mind can possibly, con
ceive of; nothing teed than an immense atone py
ramid, composed of layers or amines of from
eighteen inches to nearly three feet in thickness,
and from five to eight feet In length. It has
'level top of more than fifty feet &jure, though
it is evident that it was once completed, but that
some great convulsion of nature hue displaced its
wire top, no it evidently now lies a hogs and
broken mass upon one of to sides, though nearly
covered by the sands.
This pyramid differs, in. some respects, from
the Egyptian pyramid; it is, or was, more Blen
der or pointed, and while those of. Egypt are
composed of steps or layers, receding as they
rise, the American pyramid wu, undoubtedly, a
more finished 'tuatara, the outer endue of the
blocks were evidently out eo an 'angle that glue
the structure, when new and complete, a smooth
or regular surface from top to'bottom.
From the preseift level of the sande that sue-
Toned it, there are 62 distinct layers of stone,
that will average at least two feet; this gives Its
present height one hundred and four feet, so that
before the top wee displaced, It most have bun,
judging from 'art angle of its shies, at !mist 25
feet higher than at present. How far it extends
beneeth the endue of the sands,it is Impossible'
