The Taurus/ and the East both opened out on the Gazdte yesterday morning, because It es pressed a modestidoribt of the propriety of the county 'eubscrihing half a million of dollars to the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad.— Moorruspondent in the Journal has also , comb to the aid of the road. and all these several par: flee display the came spirit, and resort to personal amanita upon the editor of ale paper. All this pother, and the scurrility resorted to, are evidence of the vreskoers of the cause 'hick to mazy! writer' have' undertaken to sustain. I good. cause needs no such disreputable mode of defence. , It Is charged that we were always opposed to the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad; that we Were auxlons to defeat and labored to defeat the right of way last winter; that we published latlatomatury artleles, calculated to embitter Wheeling, and excite her to oppose the right or way; that our seal for Retreads is moat apt to develop itself In favor of those which ter mutato in Allegheny, where it Is sald our inter ests and sympathies Ile; that we ware never heartily in favor of any treat Pittsburgh Interest. We state somewhat* length the nature and scope of the attack upon no, to chow the sort of weapons with which the friends of the Stenben7 villa road defend that work. • Now It can make, no, difference to the tax payers of the county whether our motives ere correct or not, ac - our prktest introit founded. If the friends of that work have any good arguments to present to jus tify their demand, they will be better employed in producing them, than In smelting our me'. tires. It may appear possible to some men that we might bare an honest difference of opin ion from the majority of the Grand Jury as to the, propriety of the county making the subearip• tion asked for, and still be friendly to the work. We mailed no rean's motives; we simply assert el a right and discharged a duty in esprusing our dissent from' the action of the Greed Jury, and this has brought upon -us ell this personal assault. Before proceeding to present some farther rea son, why Allegheny county should not make the subscription asked for, we beg leave to pronounce every syllable of the above noticed attacks upon our motives founded in falsehood, and ye charge the writers, one and all, who made; them, with uttering a deliberate libeL There wu nothing in the previous mune of tale paper, and nothing' erieti in any other way, to justify or -exciter such tablets upon our motives. It is not true that we have always opposed the Pittsburgh and, Steubenville Railroad, or that we we now opposed to it. We should be jest as murk gistided to see it built and pros - perosess any other read in the county. We have nevec sneaked it, and we defy these libellous writers to quote any thing from us attacking it. We did at one time defend the Ohio and Penn sylvania Railroad from an • assault from that quarter, but' so far from• attacking It, we have given it all the aid we could comoientionly At the eau time we ben never approved of the project, as a safe financial operation. We have always had doubts of the feasibility and safety of the Intrestiaent—doubts entertained in Gam ut...it with many of the bat sughteers and most lenient men in the country. We have stated these doubts, privately, frankly, to the friends of the work, but have forborne to express them , publicly out of kindness to those engaged in constructing it. It is not true that we desired the defeat of the right of way last winter, and that we labored for Itt Acv columns give the Ue to theta state ments. -So far bolo publishing Inftembrateri ar ticles to excite Wheeling, 'we forbore, at the In quest of the friends of the Steubenville road, until patience and decency would permit as to be . silent no longer. The Aloud, in which these charges are made, published more articles calculated to exults Wheeling than we did. Every thing was done by es, and others, to propitiate Virginia, without avail. Even the great bridge cue was suffered to Ile' over, and the cause nearly or altogether escrifloird to obtain this right of way. It is wholly untrue alit. our out for Railroads is molt apt to develop hear in favor of road, to terminate in Allegheny. We have given to the Allegheny Valley, and to the Pithhurgh and Conelkiille Iletiroads, a &est earnest, and we hive reason to beloll a most effialent support, an s d-neither. of them laminate in Allegheny.`We have advocated strongly the' conetrucUon of a mai which at present terminates in Allegheny, but we have - always been the open and earnest advocate of that road,—the only one which Allegheny has, or to ever likely to hare,—t yeti satiny! in PiUabargA! It If not true that our interests lie In Alleghe ny. We own no property them, and have no interests there, separate and: apart from the general prosperity of both cities which we have always, looked upon as one, of equal rights, equal irjelleges and equal interests. We have always discarded as most contemptible that narrow feeling 'Motile always seeking to excite jealoueles in a ow:trinity which ought to be a unit on every subject. It we have never heartily Stip pot tnd any great Pittsburgh Interest, aa Is charged, )then we hare failed to understand our pm motives, and our columns bare not represented our feelings; for no great Pittaburgh intelest has ever been car ried without our support, or has ever wanted our earnest advocacy. If any change can lie et our door of a mistake in the conduct of oar paper, it is that we have made it too intensely • Pittsburgh paper. ' Enough on this .object. The reader will for give the egotism of a defence which has bet:eine necessary from repeated 4assults of a similar nature. We hare Aron how baseless and pure ly malicious are all the charges, and shell now proceed ; ray briefly, to state some objections to the county subscription to the Pittsburgh and Steubenrille Railroad. The erst reason, =Cons sufficient to satisfy any rea s onable and prudent man, is, that the legislation is -not complete, that Virginia has not / minted the Company the parer to make a rail road' and onitruct a bridge en her territory; atu fgors than that, after eamen, protracted, and mast pressing solicitations, she has reared , 1 . And not only go, bat at the late election a Senator was elected from that dietrlet violently opposed to any inch grant, and elected too, on that very Issue. The friends d the rod now treat this vital defect se • mere trifle, and avow their intention to Invade the sovereignty of the State and anise what Virginia Us refined to great. Does any sineman believe that her peo ple will not resent itch Invasion of her territory, or that her courts will not vindicate her honer? The Idea of attempting to go through Virginia territomatut to balid abridge without any legal authority, is so utterly foolish and ridiculous, that It shows that the men who' entertain It, are unfit to be entrusted with public fads. Another reason why we oppesW-tdi subsigir tion is, twang we have seen no exhibit from the Micron of the Company which . will justify the Ocanadisitinere in risking voltage an =crank What , fill the toad oast tkpsy t—and ihat moo has It I are pertinent guiltless. nom *Opera made by the Easiest: , of the Company, in the early put of 1852', thircost of the work., exclusive of the bildge over the Mon. ongsbela and the one Oyer the Ohio, and tact's sive of depoi gronnds 'end depot 'buildings, and motive power end ears of all detoriptions, was estimated at - - -7 L $1,2'36,229 Six= then, the price of iron and labor have both &delimited so • much, that we add, at the lowest loulation, - - $200,000. For depot grounds and building, 100,000, For machinery and care - 100,020 For two bridges - 500,000 Gere we have a sum af ,two millions two hun dred thousand dollars, without emoting interest on bonds and other expenses, the interest on which, at 6 per cent., will amount to $132,000. This brings ue to the neat question, will the road pay ? On looking over tbcrieport referred to lie find a very elaborate argument- end-esti mate, in which the receipts from - convoying coal, from local bueiness and from through busi ness are all carefully estimated at their utmost probable amount, and the net revenue arrived at, all told, is sll2,l2s—about 5 per cent. on our estimate of the cost of the work. We do not believe, however, thatthe'estimate of reoeipta In the report-can be relied upon. The local hual. nets Is rated too high,' by eome $30,000, and the coal business which is estimated at $30,000 will for come years to coma be little or nothing. • What are the resources of the company ? The amount of private subscriptions we do not cer Minty know. They are not probably.over $250,- 000. The city of Pittsburgh $250,000. The county of Allegheny, if the aubsoription is made, $500,000—51,000,00 0 , or lees than ono half of the amount necessary. to flinch the work. - Per the remainder the road will have to be mart gaged, and the bonds sold at enormous sacrifice, if at all. We question If they would sell at any rate, unless Virginia will grant the right of way. These reasons will suffice to show why we op pose. this subscription. We do not believe the county can safely make it, end we hope the Grand Jory will re-consider their vote, and per mit the's:natter to rest until further inquiry in made into the petition of the company, and the probability of obtaining thesiglet of way. iABOLF!I081611•3 13 11SILDILITI".—Eipe eking cf "Abolitionism" in the abstreet—that deep-seat ed feeling of hostility to American Slavery which pervade! so many minds in this nation—we are lei to ask the Union what reasons it can give for coupling Abolitionism with infidelity, 113 it does In yesterdsy'd issue? The only attempt at reply so for ventured is a silly story retailed by the Ptst„ttnd echoed by the journal, to the ef fix: that Snerllf Magill threatened the Commis sicaers with no a•tack from this paper if the pub lioation of the County sonnets were withheld front us. We paid no attention to this petty fa iiricatioo, when it foot appeared, eupposing that the Commissioners would undertake a more Buh -1 gantlet defence of their crone; but as we end them relying on this, alone, we devote a little space to give it a quietus. The story in thus dwelt upoiin the Journal of yesterday: "in the Commercial fawned of Thursday mots raing last„twe informed the world that Sheriff Mogill had gone to the County Commissioner" to endeavor to necore the little job for the Ga..2tte of publishing the County diet:ovate; and being informed that the flarette oouid not have the ad verttoement, Sheriff Magill informed the Com missioners, through one of their number, (Mr. King) that "if they did not give the accounts to the DCBCIOD, the Deacon Would attack the report." the Commiseionera had the temerity to disre gard the Deacon's 'attack,' and did not give him I the jab. It In worthy of remark, that our an-, nrsoucemeut on Thursday was followed by an at tack from the Deacon on Friday: Sheriff Magill had spoken by authority, and the Deacon was as good as hie word " Now, If this wore every word true, it would only"prove that we are as mercenary as the Ant ' and Journal, nethiog more; since it Is notorious that the Commissioners wciuld go without a word of defence if the Publication of the County so counts had been withheld from them. But thus is norooe word of truth in the whole story. We never interchanged a word with Mr. Mar gill on the eubject—never naked him to speak to the Comminaioners in our behalf, and, of course, never authorised him to "threaten" any attacks from us. The assertion of the Journal that any cock threat came' "by authority" from us, is purely gratuitous. it in likewise untrue that Sheriff Magill went "to the Ceunty ,Commiesioners to endeavor to secure the little jab for the Gazette of publishing the County accounts."
