before this subscription is consummated, we

pay, and even then, 'Shen its great expense and

We are opposed to all infringement of state rights.
Virginia will not glee the right of way level:,
it is wholly wrong to attempt a forcible marines
upon her territory. Iris dangerous to the pro
party invested and to good morals and the pence
of community. Allegheny county certainly ought
not to lavesther money in such an undertaking.
We make these remarks with great reluctance.
Nothing but a stern reuse of duty bas prompted
them. We shall rejoice to see the Steubenville
road built, no well an that of any road in this
community. We have no personal interest in
any of them, other than that of any citizen of
the county. We were in great hopes last winter
that the right of way would be granted by the
Legislature of Virginia, and that the work could
go on; but tinder the ,e.xlming circumstances we
consider it dangerocifor the county to give Its
bonds to a Companyhedged round with so many
dif f iculties, and having so many powerful deem
and we could not permit the act to be consummated
tmtjecting the county to such fearful rusks , with.
Ott a warning in time. If the subscription is
made, and the road Is built and proves :stunieu
ful, we shall roost heartily rejoice; but if the
county has to pay the interest of this heavy In
veitraent, while we shall exceedingly regret it,
we obeli have the consolation of knowing that
