TUZGLIPIIIO Reronta. The St. Lents Repub •
lean has an article denouncing the whole pre
sent system of telegraphic reports between the
East and West. It say*
"The persons who; are employed to report for the
press are wholly Incompetent for the denim of the
etation. They have neither the intelligent*, the
judgment. The enterprise nor the Industry neces
sary to the proper collation and transmiesion of
such news as la, of general interest. They do
not seem to know what we want They seem to,
think- that we delight in quarrels( murders,
hanginp, maiming, and the horrible generally.
In the transmission of Congressional news, the
most unimportant items are generally selected,'
and the remainder is confused and unsallefacto ,
ry. It is so of everything else. The California
news is very frequently of a stereotyped kind,
alwayetelliagna that mining is very prosperous,
add giving none of the dravbaoks which fotquent
ly accompany, the more authentic accounts. The
European news is no better—enough only being
seat to mar the intereM of the whole when It ie
reached. .
"The reporter should bednade to understand
that we want reliable reports of Important *rents,
restricting himself less as to the quantity than
the quality of the artlalm \ That arrangements
should be made for a regular oeimmary of Inci
dent, likely to be of interest, or advantage, to
the pa:teeter locality for which they are intend
ed. Thus, cotton quotations may do very well
for Memphis, MOW., end New Orleans, but we. ,
apprehend only a few of our readers ware shoat
sach things. in regard to Congressional mat-
tem, all that is of national Interest, and every
thing hiring ulatlon to Modern interest, ehoold
besought 'out and- transmitted; but as for the
aunty, shabby, mean reports heretofore Bent to
us, we would not give a cent for them- Meet
generally, they are abstracted from reports for.
Northern cities and States and haven direct ref
erence to them and' their interests, and if any
thing is taken from them designed for the Wart,
It to generally in an unintelligible olive."
After some farther remarks in the name strain,
the Republican adds :
...This state of things has been brought *boot
by the officers and agnate If the Telegraph lines.
The whole matter of reporting for the newspa
pers Is In the hands of Mr. Reid, of Philadel
phia, who Is also Superintendent of the Tele
graph lines from Philadelphia, Cincinnati and
Pittsburgh. Ili has undertaken to control the
dispatches, as well as to prepare. theta for the
press. He has Deluded the reporters, and a very
tocompetent set they have prided vo be. The
press hue been powerless in the matter, and has
had nothing to do except to pay whatever prices
have been pat upon the reports."
• . In answer to this, an- agent of the Telegraph
Company at 8t Louis, sends in a oommunica,
don, front which we take the following.
”Ton know or ought to know Mkt newepaper
reporting has always been an Bement monopoly.
That it ism been controlled entirely by the pub
