I take tidemethod of coninumicancg to your Society a description of an insect which destroys the, white grape. The Insets Is of a green color, one fourth of an inch in length, with six legs, and two hooks on each foot.. The two hind legs are formed like the the legs of a grasshopper; the head is large in pro portion to the body, the feelers three-eighths of •ao inch long; the month is fumbled with two lets of gatherers for holding its food, the outer set being longer than the inner ones. The two Inner ones are furniebed with sharp, homey holders that work right into the mouth. There are two protuberances on Ito binder end, oat around with bristles. I have raised two of the !vents from 7• piece of the vine, but they ore both melee and therefore, have no perforators. The females have perforators With which they perforate the wood into the pith, and deposit their eggs. In this way thep Injure the vine. - On the first of Jana last, I found a female on a Reap berry bush, which it likewise perforates. The female tel and thicker than the male, its body being hall en loch, and its bind legs three sixteenths of an inch in length. The perforator is peculiar In its construction. • For the but four or five years we have tried to raise the white grape, bnt the vines were kill ed as wo rapposed, by frost, never thinking of the mischief done by en insect. In removing, however, some killed vines, we discovered them pierced with bole lan locust holes, and this led to the discovery of the insect described. Since this time I have raised them from the egg, and, having excellent microscopes at command, I ex amined them carefully, and given above the re sult of ray observations. Never having seen a description of such en insect in any work, I thought I would give an account of it to your Society, hoping it might be of use •to the pub lic, If any means could,be Invented to destroy it I remain yours , &a, . - A.NDESW RAIVIZITON. The Chants of the Beolety were present ed to Mr. RauLstostfor his valuable communi cation. The following communication was handed to the Secretary by Mr. Murdock: - Le Cure, or Vicar of Waktftdd Pears —About one bushel of these pears, when pulled about the lstof November, wee put in a barrel end set on the' kitchen porch; on the top of them'sras put a bushel of Lewis's pears, and a cloth thrown over the whole. The Lewis mellowed off beauti fully, and were-pronounced delicious by every suitor ' who tasted theist. The Le Cure, on being reached, were found unripe, and for a while were left to themselves during which time' they got frozen. After they thawed they were taken inside the home to ripen; but it would ap pear that' the frost had eo chilled them se to de story their ripening powers—the bulk of them rotting off when brought into a warm otmos phers, with all their harsh and unripe taste, in plane of mellowing.
