"rue • - and I remember an article which .1
think appeared in the Soutbe:rn Literary
Messenger, come years ago, from the pen
of Judge : Harper, of South Carolina, in
which he generously exempted slaves from
'ordinfry responsibility in this matter of
pilfering : According to his definition, the
offence in a freeman would amstituto a
mime, while in a slave it was only s vice:
Although I am far from thinking the gums
of daves equal in character to freemen . I
have a bea or opin ion of them than is pre
valent among svoliolders. As a general
rule, bad misters make bad slaves; sad the
lar . go slaveholding districts, where them
exude the &admit amount of ignorance,
and;the merest rule, will furnish the word
examples of servile depravity: •
The, theories of "A _Carolinian" are,
therefore, not borne out by the experience
of slaveholdata. Their testimony as to the
debasing effects of slavery is unanimous, or
at any rate:the). are unanimous in' testifyi ng
to the &haled condition of tho slave'; and
if they include the frac nagroln the on
sure, it will not help the cause of "A Oar.
olinip," since that unfortunate clad are
only free in name," throughout the South.
-13istes. It may bo made a question
whe •• the so-called free people of color
are not as much outraged in their rights as
the slaves.
Tn regard to 'tits; eondition and charecter
of slaves, A may be remarked that they
have been painted, by the Mends and apol
ogists of the institution, in as many varying
and diverse colors as the points of view
from which the'Fibject has been regarded;
so that all sorts of arguments would be an
swered, but for the clashing statements of
these gentlemen. When the duty of
emancipation is talked 'of, we are told that
the thing -is utterly abetird—that the
slaves are too ignorant and degraded to
betema American citizens, and too indolent
to take care of themselves when turned
loose upon scciety. Some go so far as to
insist that the African rue is so inferior to
the Exinqiereci, te forever to be incapable'of
freedom; that slavery is their natural and
prosper condition, ordained by Heaven; and
intimate that there is something like impi
ety in propozipg to change it Another
Clam of apologista for slavery, or probably
the s a me, when assailed from a different
point of view, will give you an entirely
_opposite' account of the matter. When
defending the humanity and Christian
sympathy of masters for their slaves, they
make it the most beautiful patriarchal eye.
tem imaginable—everything moves like
cloak-work and the utmost harmony and
good feeling exists between the bead of the
family and his confiding dependants. The
idea of lemma subjection and constrained

this beautiful reproduction of the primeval
age, itutterly inadmissible, and is set down
as a vile abolition' invention. They con

ante; and I would respectfully inquire of
the friends of slavery, why this great and
rapid progress, under every discouragement,
may not proceed until the negroes shall
equal and snrpass the present position of
the whites in the scale of civilization?
The' fact is undeniable, that the progress
which has been made by the colored people
of the South, has been in spite of the most
strenuous efforts of the law-makers to pre
vent it. The statute books of the slave.
holding States demonstrate this fact, and
there is no usein disputing it; not a clause
or proviso can be - fraud to the contrary.
The`contact with the whites, constrained
and cruel as it has been; has civilized the
negro, and cultivated his understanding to
some extent; inSpite . of a barbarous code
designed to counteract that 'result. And,
besides, individuals aro often better than
the hw.makers—women and children are
generally so. They have in the worst
times imparted more or less instruction to
the slaves, in disregard of legal penalties.
Dr. Faller, in his controversy with Dr.
Wayland, loins of his open disregard of
- the ,statutes of South Carolina,in giving
instruction to his slaves. A b etter spins
is doubtless` beginning to pervade the
Eonth; but it is not yet a prevalent idea
among slaveholders. "A Carolinian" and
the gentleman just referred to, Dr. Faller,
have much over-stated the prevalence of
this feelimg—it is not common, in fact, and
will not be strong enough to modify the
barbarous code of. Slavery, until they and
others like them assail it withall the elo
quence and pciwer at their command. If
the wise, and good men of the South expect
to honey the mass of alaveholders out of
their long-cherished and deeply-rooted
prejudices, they will be egregiously
