The bill for removing the duty from railroad

but was attempted to bo called up. That motion
was laid upon the table, which disposes cf the
whole anbject.• The iron manufacture, the grimi

The amount of railroad tree reqmired ter the
consumption of thetountry during the present
jeer will not be less than 800,000 tons, of which
probably one-fourth will be. imported under the
present tariff: Had this bill passed the whole
of it would have bump:ltch/teed abroad, and the
labor ofTie country would have been deprived
, of employment to that amount.
The Senate have been hammering at ihe'Paci
fie railroad bill, making little or no progress, en.
less the delivery of a certain number of speech
es may be so cotuddered. It is obvious that the
project is too net far the capacity of Congress,
sad after a week or two more of debate, it will
be dropped. '
The House hie got tired of waiting upon the
obstinate garrulity of the other branch, and has
again taken up the subject of land.dietribution,

The session of the Agricultural Society to-day
was interesting. Mr. Kennedy, of the Calm
Doreen, was chosen Secretary in place of Dr.
Lee, s of the Patent Moe. Dr. Lee has been a
good officer, has. taken an active aid effuilent
part in organising the Society, and Is identified
with the cause of advancing agriculture by as
, satiated effort and the dissemination of knowl
edge among farmers; appropriatelo their caMog.
Some of the purposes of the Society are entire
ly useless and ought to be dropped at ono,. One
of these Is the Idea of taking poseession of the'
Agricultural department of the Patent alien, and
managing it for the benefit of the semen:tent,
the farmers, and themselves. This is coming
down altogether too string far an agricultural
production en young as the Society. Whatever
concern the federal government properly has
with agriculture can be managed by public offi
cers constitutionally appointed and paid, more
economiaally, and better In every way, than by
any voluntary usociation. I wens, that for
one, I have not expected much from the Society
at any time since its organisation, end it has
pleased God to diminish the little love I had for
it in the begininiag."
