A TatiriDgeare,- , -A debate on the Tariff
arose . incidentally inthe House, on Tuesday, on
the subject of the reference of the; President's
Message. A trynopels of the debate hi se fallen/
Mr. Smoke, of N. Y., contended fora t3peclal
Committee to consider that part of the Message
relating to the tariff and the revenue. To refer
those ,objects to the Committee of the Whole or
the ComOttco of Ways arid Means would to
to lose them for the peados, vkile, here yea the
Treasury with • Burping of: twenty millions.
This made itimperatively necessary to revise
• the tariff, and he should desire to have the list
of free articles greatly enlarged, and raw um*.
rule of manufacture, especially, admitted duty
free. This he contended was also the desire of
the country.
Mr. Ball of Mo. thought the people had not
expressed exactly such a desire a. Mr. Brooks
attributed to them with reference to changes
in the', tariff; still the revenue must be re
duced.,
Mr. Brooks &dual want to discuss the matter
now, bat only naked for the Select Committee

iniukand ready to be taken uplifter the holidays.
Mr. Cliagman wrieready to take It. up now;
he went for a general redaction of duties, and
would la satiated to reduce the revenue to thlr:
ty millions. He did not wistlto be understood
as agreeing with the; previous speaker in the
manner in which this was to be done.
Mr. Brown, of Miss, isferred to the discus

rho gentleman (Mr. Brooks) had prophesied that
the reveals woul*fall off to some twenty mil
lions, and pow we have that sum surplus, which
ho knew not what to do with. Mr. Brown thought
there could' be no difEculty finding a use for
the money to long as we hen a,debt of seventy

Mr. Brook's amendment not agreed M. The
