The Hon. Edward Everett received a lett&

stating that all hope of Mr. Webster's manly

George T. Curtis, who returned from Marshfield
this morning, confirms the report 7,
BOSTON, Oct. 22
Oa Tuesday Mr. Webeter was considered by
his physician not to be in immediate danger;
then wu even a probability of his being able
to resume his public duties in &few days; but
before evening hie disorder, whiob is of the bow
els, took an infiamatory turn, and he continued
to grow worse until yesterday, when Dr. Jeffries
became 'damned. Mr. Webster's wife and eon
were with him. Dr. Warren left here for Mirth
field this morning. The dlstingrdshed statesman
is fully aware of his danger, and his intellect is
unclouded; he is able to convene freely.

Cen. Scott visited the Meehasiles Fair last
night, and the spacious saloon, nearly 300 'feet
long, was crowded with the dense mass. Scott
entered the 'rear door and on entering the stag
ing erected at the end of the Hall, was greeted
with shouts that almost shook the building.—
The band struck Up "110.11 to the Chief." Joel.
rut Vanua; President of the Inatititte, addres
sed him on behalf of the Institute. and alluded
eloquently to hie life, whichwas interwoven with
every chapter of history and the glory of Me
country. Gen. Scott replied briefly and elo.
quently„ expressing himself overwhelmed with
tie honors thrust upon him, by his too partial
countrymen. He _complimented the ladies whose
waving handkerchiefs from the galleries were as
expressive as the cheers of the opposite sex.—
In conclusion, he alluded is the boxes placed in
the Hall for contributions to the Washington
Monument, and passed an eloquent 'Mogi= on
the life, character and services of Washington.
Ho alluded to the monument in this city, and
asked the privilege of depositing his mite along
with the members of the Institute in behalf of
that noble undertaking. Mayor Jerome was
then called upon and Wetly - addressed the as
semblage, paying a high tribute to the genius
of Gen. Scott, during which he was frequently
interrupted by cheers. Gen. Scott then passed
into the committee-rooms, amid a scene of the
most unbounded enthusiasm ever witnessed,
where he partook of cefreehments, and then re
tired.
