The Loidon Times of the Bth instant hu a
curious article under this title, which shows in
striking manner how little our institutions
and the principles and sentiments of eiur people
are underlitoad in the old world, and how grossly
ly this ablest of the European Journals tom been
deceived, or has wilfully misrepresented facts,
with regard to the nature and extent of the fili
bustering mania—for in some It can be expressed
by on weaker, term—among the people of the
United States. .
The Times seems to take it for granted that
the sentiments expressed by a few fanatics in
New York sad New Orleans are universally en
tertained by our
,oltisens. Ignorant or regard-
Ins of the decided stand which the American
press, almost in a body; hate taken against such
expeditions In every.ehape and celor, and appa
rently Ignorant of the fact that the people harp
with equal unanimity discountenanced them, it
boldly charges the United States with being a
piratical nation preparing to swallow up not
only Cabe, but the whole of Spate's American
permissions and even the island. of the Pacific.
Nor stopping at this, It asserts covertly bat un
mistakeably that republic opinion in the United
States will sanction this messure."
This article of the Times, which is by no
means contemptible in point of ability and force,
bas been evidently drawn out by the fast of the
revival of the Order of the "Lone Star," and
upon this feat it bases the unfounded, and to
as ridlooloue etatements which we referred to
abave.
We hsvo drawn attention to theta assertions
of the Times to show the manner in which the
sentiments honestly held by the people of this
muntey are viewed by those of Europe. It is
the same with regard to our peculiar institu
tions. Looking through this misty medium of
prejudice, and 'reasoning uPonecattated facts, it
is no wonder that we, oar sentiments and insti
tutions see viewed thus bytkaue blind leaders of
the blind.
It has bog been a subject of remirk and ridi
cule that the Times boa been most completely
end perpetually bossed by its correspondent, in
the United Slates. This foot may partially ex
plain the origin of the slanders upon the Azonti-
Ilan people which so often disgrace the columns
of that paper, but it cannot do away with the
false itopreseleas thus made upon the minds of
its realm; which impremious, 'produced frus
such a source upon lb. Influential and rtcpecta-

Heaven smiled von us, sad gave us liberty

plains with minerals—with lead, iron and cop

growing of •hemp and wool. These being the ,
mat materials of our national defense, they
ought to have extended to them adequate and
fair protection, that our minufactorms and la

those of Europe, and that we may have within
our country a eupply of those leading and im

Old Bullion hating registered a declaration of
war against the Tehuantepec Railroad and the
Ocean Steamers, hugone home to Missouri theft
to watch the earrliti of the wataik, and to step
in when any chance shall off!r of making eaidtal
for the Senatorship that will be vacant at the
expiration of Atchison'. turn. Than is a good
deal of the material known as humbug in the
remarkable charade, of Mr. Benton. In fact
he was for many years . the humbug of the Sea
ate and tbeurnantry. His opposition to the Te
huantepec route arises from his attachment to
the scheme of an overused railroad from lilt
folds to San Fransison, which, In the present
state of the country, is an unmitigated humbug,
and woad not be dreamed of by any cdhelt per.
eon, were it not a convenient hobby in Miami
politica. As to the project of building a rail
road scrota the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, It Is
entirely practicable, and ought lobe at once pro
ceeded with and completed. The execution of
the work has undoubtedly been sariotudy retard.
ed by the disputes over the Oatey grant, which
was a mere speculation ♦dpenture in the begin.
log, and has never been any thing else•
' CoL Benton has always had a plias against
New York. Accordingly be now says that New
Orleans is languishing, and not for the want of
the Tehtiantepeo railroad, but because the money
at Congress la lavished in rapport of immense
steamers noncentrated.at:New York. Now the
truth Is, that New Orleans wee in the saute sta.
tionary condition, of which her Miens now com
plain before the government guide any advan
ces of mosey toward' establishing lines of mall
steamers, and New Orleans has as large a share
of these appropriations, according to her sire,
as New York. There are many lines, aloe, of
which the latter port is :the central point,
which are quite independent of treasury contri
butions;
