GEO. W. WOODWARD
There, reader, you harsandge Woodward'ads
'fense of the nouns he saw proper to take in the
Worm Convention, In reference to foreigners,
and we leave It to the judgment of every honest
Man to way, whether it does not leave him in
worse position than be was before. Previous to
this unfortunate letter, be stood not only charged
but fully convicted, of having offered and advo
cated a most ontrageons proposition In the Con
vention to amend the Constitnticrn of this State,
In 181174 but now, In additiOn to that, inthefsee
of an official record, and in violation of every
principle of veracity and common sense, he at
tempts to deny the plain, obvious face, spread
upon the face of that record.
The first paragraph of his lettter contains the
tolerable quibble that we anticipated would be
mode by some of his advocates—that he Is not a
uNitive American." We were not prepared to I
see • man who occupies the position Judge
Woodward does, both an a Judge and a candi
date, resort to to questionable •n expedient to es-
cape responsibility. But that is not the pies
lion before Its. Our Wilma new is with hie
motion to exclude foreigners from office, and
from the right of suffrage.
He admits that he made the motion, but
saps—"Tb►t was simply a limitation of a mo
tion made by Mr. Thomas, a Whig !member bum
Chester county," dto. What was Mr. Thomas's
motiont arid what does he mean by "a limita
tion of a motion!" This attempt to asst Abe
responsibility of -his own illiberal motion upon
Mr. Thomas, is a trick at which even the edi:
tors of the Post might blurb. But hold en. We
shall soon see how that was.
We copy , the history of the whole nutter from
the "Debatee," vol. v. p. 448, and onwards;
".4. motion was made by Mr. Magee, of Perry
county, that the Colivention . proceed at this time
to, the second reading and consideration of reso
lution No. 48, in the Fords following, sir
"Resolved, That a committee be appointed to
Inquire into the expe4ienoy of so amending the
Constitution of Pennsylvania to to prevent the
hours immigration into this State of free pe
of color, and fugitive slaves from other 8 •
and Territories."
(Mr. Msgeo ndrocated his resolution in a few
words.]
Ill'Donnelt demanded the yeas and ways.
Mr. Thomas, of Chester County, moved to
amend the same, by inserting between the words
"or' and" "free," In the third line, the word

meetings wore called at Clarion, Brookville,
Ridgeway, Bmitliport, and other plasma where
the officers Made espositions of their plane, en

showed the necessity of the Immediate union of
the people along the route In subsotibing and
securing tubseriptions of stook.
The immediate fruit of the efforts of the offi

with which the papers at Brookville take hold of
the /abject,. we have no:doubt that the Grand

week, will authorize the subscription of 05,000
this, with what we are assured, Idaho eubscritt•

amount of one. and a quarter millions, and will

we are told that as soon as Allegheny county
shall be ensured that the road will not prove ■

be added, placing the speedy constrection of the
road, its entire length. beyond a contingency.
