The Contract for Carrying Paerengers riVr the
Philadelphia end Columbia Railroad.
The Board ot,Canal Commissionerahavint\teni
under consideration for more than a year, am
question of the propriety and the expediency, of
assuming the control of passenger travel over
the Philadelphia and Colombia Railroad,.o2lMi
measly determined, on the 19th of May, in favor
of the measure. To enable thekto carry out
the arrangement, folly and effeetruslfy, and with
a view to th e best interests of the (Common
wealth, they entered into a contract with fifteen
Bingham & Dock (an old and, well known \ trans
porting haitee) to furnish the oars, and su
perintend the tianspOrtatian, without any' on
tool over the faro to be received. For this ser
vice; they are to be paid a stipulated price per
passenger per mile. .
An attempt has been made to mialimil the pub
lic mind in relation to the course of the Board,
by the insertion of numerous anonymous. corn
, municatins in the columns of the press of Phil
adelphia, several of which it is now acknowledg,
el were paid for either by the Pennsylvania'
Railroid Company or by its officers. To these
misstatements, coming before 'the people of the
State id , the manner in which they did, no Oft
cial.replY could have been.expected; and it was
not until after the appearance of the authorised
publications of the President and Board of Dire°-
, tore of the Compiny, that it was deemed "properto anticipate the Anneal Report to thi,Legisla
tore, and to place the note connected with the
negation at losue.,befere.the tax-payers °Oen-
