Datarrsocs Fns—A fire broke out at a little
after two O'clook on Saturday afternoon, in •
stable belonging to John Cunningham, In the
fear pt a house owned by him, and occupied by
Freder.ck Porter, Confectioner, on Prospect et.,
.eight Aaoraabove .Washington. The day was
intensely warm, • and the roofs of the surround
ing hewpo dry as tinder. The hOuses were gen
erally-frame, and the flames spread rapidly.
Mr. Walter, shoemaker, below Mr. Porter,
loot a two story frame.
John Phillips three two story frames; one oft-
copied by himself, and on.a . by 'Phillip Leffler,
thairmaker, both en Prospect street; the other
by A. J.'Kemp, bricklayer, on Bill alloy.
Mr. Kemp, in addition to his furniture, lost
aixty dollars in notes, which were burned.
A two story brick house, and stable, belong
lug to John Nolan, on • the same street, were
very much rojared.
The flames spread above Cunningham's stable,
where they ofiginated, and soon the greatest
consternation existed in the midds-of those liv
ing in the ilti4hborhoul The houses are nearly
all frame, and as the supply of water was very
Insufficient (though the firemen were promptly
on the ground,) it was feared that thni desola•
lion would be wide agreed.. The inhabirants for
squares around commenced, readdring their fur
niture, and the utmost er•nrasioo. prevailed .
Proceeding Presp , ••• street, on the Nit
hand, a :two etory Uuii Yee, belonging 4* Mr.
MoMancts, shoemaker, rig destroyed.
A colored woman, who, canto we did not
learn, who had recently r.nioved to the neigh
. borkood, lost a frame two nary
Sarno& McKee, a frame on .prospect street,
and two frame buildings cu 1181 alley .
A two story
. frame and stable, belonging to
John McFall, caner, were destroyed.
A two story house and etable, occupied by
Wm. Fanston, carter, and belonglug to 8. D.
Moore, were entirely consumed. •
DavidlicKee's two awry frame was burned
to the ground, an was alyi that belonging to
John Musgrove.
The funaltire or a large majority of the bon

-
ees already mentioned, was burned, no rapidly
did the flames spread, and had it not fortunately
been that thtre woo bat little wind, the damage
would have been immense. As it was, it was
very severe, and falls on that Glees of the com-
munlty who tare least able to tinstain it. We
•1 could learn of no insurance upon any of the
property, the companies, we believe, refasing to
• take risks.
A two story hone?, recopied by John Black;
• wan . very much lojured, no were three occupied
by Thomas Dickson,
r draymao; John Deice'', car
ter: Mrs. McCleary; storekeeper; Mr. Robinson,
carter, nod Mrs. Harper, who owned three
. houses. Setae of the above were injured by
' Are, others were nearly torn down by the am
mo, in their efforts to stay the ravages of the
Blume. A cue story Frick dialling, on Bill
alley, occupied by Peter McCoy, wan also barr
ed, together with a two story frame house,
.
occupied by Luke Chapman.
The total lose, so far as we were able to ascer
tain it, woe about ten thousand dollars. The
• are itriiid to have been the work of an incendi
ary, a matt having been seen to issue from the
stable where the games originated, n Mort time
before they broke out. The buildings burned
extended over o considerable epnce of ground,
and were held on lease, the land belonging to the
Denny estate; as the leases have but between
one and two years to run, the ie65OC3 will scarcely
re-erect any of the buildings.
