The celebration of the spler.did victories achieved on the Canada frontier, in 1814, has been the great event of the armrest . . Tone of thousands have participated' in this grand ova tion, who will recollect it as'among the choice .and prod& recollections of their lives • We left Pittsburgh on Monday morning, with a large company of delegates, on the eleven o'clock train, and in three hones and a half were .safely landed at Alliance. Nowhere have we seen more promptness, speed, and more excel lent arrangements for the comfort of passen• gene than on the Ohio and Pennsylvania rail road. It is truly a model road. We left Alli ance far Cleveland in a. train of. twelve- densely loaded care, and two cr three baggage cars, and arrived in good time The arrangements were admirable;'and were meat efficiently carried cot. - Aa soon as we arrived, there wee an immedi ate rush for the boate,of which there were three lying at the wharf, to wit: the Northern Indian, the Buckeye State; and the: Alabama, all fine beats. Our delegation had agreed to go on the Northern Indiana. Ongoing aboard, we found every room and berth taken, and had to content ourselves with such. accommodation as there was left. There were 1500 pereons aboard, andthe cabin door was completely covered from ot.e end to the other, and every chair, settee, and avail able place was occupied during the nigat by those who wished to. snatch a little rest or sleep. It was no better in the other boats. All were crowded to the utmost capacity: Through the politeness of. the officers I secured a comfortable berth, and thus fared better than most of toe delegation. The Northern lediana tocea of the most splen did beats on the Lake, well found in every re spect, sod it is worth a trip to have an opportu nity to inspect her. This is her first Hatton.— Ehe cost about $170,000, and is making money I fast for her owners. Although we left port last, we passed all the other booth, sod' united in Haifalo, from two to four hours - ahead. curing the night we had quite a heavy sea, and a good many of our Pittsburghors, among others, made an intimate acquaintance with that unpleasant companionisearsickness, and :litre was rib little merriment at their expense. " We landed at Buffalo at oh out 7 o'clock en Tuesday moaning and marched in procession up Main street with-music and banners, to the American Hotel, where we got breakfast. On -repairing to the cars for the Falls, after this es. cessary business was despatched. we found the rush was so tremendous that there was but .!light chance of a conveyance that way. Al though there was a long train every hour and a half, yet it had not half capacity enough for the .crowds which flocked to it. There were 'three steamboats running, aid many of the Pittsburgh eve resorted to them.. They were also densely 'crowded.. It teak ne about three holm to go , down In this way,and then we had to walk some two miles. The cars make the trip in one hour, and land thepassengers at the Falls. We found the whole region round about cov ered with tents and booths, and the people scat - tete& over s surface of some two square miles. They - were round the booths, in the tents, along the streets, filling the immense hotels to 'toffees . lion, on the island, viewing the Falls fronievery conceivable point, in feet everywhere there were crowds of people. Not one.twentieth 8f the number present were ever gathered In one oompany,at any 06, the speaking stands, large al were the listening audieneei. We shall not attempt to compute the number present, as vto could not expect to arrive at anything like accuracy in any computation we could make.— The multitude is Tastomd has gathered from ev cry State of the Union, and has cores up here to celebrate a great achierment of American arms, sad to honor our noble- aid chieftain, who has shed so much glory upon his country. We see badges here from Vermont and from Booth Caroline, from Kentucky, Teaniseee, In diaas, lllinels, Missouri and Michigan, and from almost every part of Now England, New York and Pennsylvania. I shall not undertake, in this rambling letter, to give any particular description of the pro ceedings of the eelebration; - I ehall leave that 4 the reporteni who were present, and avail .myself of their labors. . What could one person do in such a crowd—with speaking going on at differini• points—with fen thousand objects of interest and curiosity 'around him? I heard littletor speaking today, although I pasied frequently new tile crowds assembled around the atindll• Gmet I was attracted by the voice of General .terinfe , of our city, and heard bin deliver a very good and appropriate epeecb, yi Mob was well recelf4 by the people, who cave three elteu r e for ra.. ll ,l„ a b a when he concluded. The General rued the figures pretty high for kilegheuy count ; but if the en. thusisem for Scott continues to Inmate as it has done we may reach it- But I must close this hasty sketch, td en , delayer tto get back to Buffalo, as there sooner . d they =treed -1n eleertng a roof or platforoi, than it foe Flied up again- Finely dressed ladles, with their little children, were running to.and fro, with.perspiretioa, begging for a chance to get back to Buffalo, be fire the shades of night set in, leaving them without shelter, as all the available apace in the hotels Win fully occupied. I passed along the train, and at the last car, I made out to event myself on the lower step ,of the platform, and held on with both hands- Others were in the same predicament, and. the conductors scolded and implored us to - get off, but we were deaf alike to threats and entreaties. Finally, the time arrived for starting, the bell rut& the shrill whistle gave the last notice, the steam was applied, and lo! the cars would not move. The men applied their shoulders to sestet, but alt in yain--the train was overloaded. In front there' were several cattle ears, densely packed with passengers, standlog 'up, who bad been in this uncomfortable position, In the sun and dust, for one hour and a half, ' , patiently waiting for the train to Start, and congratulating themselves on their good lock. These cars were now de tached, and the locomotive started. up the road with them. The crowd gave out a shout that we were left behind, while the cattle oar passen gers cheered in triumph. Their exultation wu short. They were run on a side track, and were suffered to receive the impression that they were to be attached to the rear of.the train. Tho locomotive soon cams back, again the whistle sounded, the train started, and away we went with our immense cargo of human freight, tear fog our unfortunate cattle car friends to the jot:el of the multitude,. and to chew the cud of their disappointment. I dwell up= this aCene to give the reader some idea of the immense crowds thronging .every avenue of conveyance to and from Buffalo. The steamboats were equally srowded, and evert possible model - of conieyance was resorted to, ,frcat fine hacks and cartages, to rough farm wagons, to convey the crowds between the land ing at Schlosser, to the Fails. The crowd at the Falls to-day, wee, only limited to the means of getting there. Thousands tried to go who could not obtain conveyance. I find on my re turn here ao:Ae of the Pittsburgh delegation, who hare not been there yet. The number pre sent has been variously estimated at from forty to one hundredthon;and I suppose there were present from thirty to fifty thousand, but the great extent of ground over which the people were scattered rendered it impossible to come to any accurate estimate. Every hotel city is crowded to overfiewing, and he, indeed, is a lucky man who. obtoins a sleeping apartment The grounds about the village of Niagara preeen• a truly picturesque appearance. About half a mile from the village, large bodies of eel dit re are. eneampetl, and their white tents glit tering in the eon, the bright uniforms of the eel tiers, the numerous liege waling in the breeze, tool the strains of martial music, reader the scene one of great , attraction. Between that aut. the village, tents are scattered in every di rection, conspicuous among which is a large Cit.:ll3 pavilion. liatnxdistely adjoishig the ill- Inc, and in the edge of the boaffilful grove where tho Convention 'meets, are erected a vast number of booths,: and refreshment stands, making a teepectable village of themeelves. I Here, besides ample refreshmente, are all de : scriptioas of curiosities to be eeea fors ehilUag, from the Ohio Fat Oirl to the Mammoth Oxen; the live Seal to the - hornpipe dancer to the mu sic of bagpipes. The ears are dinned with the noise of peddlers crying their wares, of soap med Lespatiating most toquently on the extraordi bmiy virtues of their particular brown 'Windsor, awl of others with invitations to try the strength of your longs, or gaze at spots on the Sun. Th .rty or forty persons aro harrangrthing listening crowds from as many aria!! stands, in praise of the extraordinary virtues of this or that com modity or humbug, Atiohlet oil this din, here stet there are to be; seen little groups of Indians with their tasteful curiositiesand wares for tale, Looking no appeal but the anent but moat ex _prrasive glance of the eye. Between this im premptu- Bazaar and the Falls are the stands erected for xbeaelebration. The place is *most lovely one. The shade is pine, and every mar roeadhaLtatural object Is calculated to awoken eel tuelasro. Herii the solemn roar of the mighty Cataract is mingled with the shouts of the vast multitude, aa they make the air reverberate with their cheers tor Soot: and Graham. Tee convention was organized to-day, a little noon. Abodt cue o'clock the procession Ran formed, and moved to the grove, headed by the military. Although it presented a fine ap peetance, yet its effect was much diminished by the impossibility of the delegations getting to gether. The Pittsburgh delegation was a large on:, with a band of mnsio and a banner, and yet but some half dozen were able to get into pro ceodon. Some had not arrived, others had just lauded from the bbats, and the whole were scat tered over so vaet!a space that it was impOssible to gather them together. • At the principal 'stand, Hon. Tamilias Emu, of Ohio, was elected Preeident, and several dis tirguiahed gentlemen Vice Presidents. Prayer la offered by Rev. M. Wismer. Speeches were mule by Mr. Ewing, Governor Hunt, of New 'York, ex-Gov. 30111:13, of Tennessee, Col. Davis, of Baltimore, and Colonel &bottler, of. Boston. Several songs were sung, and, the vast audience manifested their: pleasure and enthusiasm by their oheers and iarioes expressions of interest acd sympathy. At another stand the crowd was addressed by Horace Greely of New York, Judge Jessup and General William Larimer, of Pa., _Boatmen White, of Cleveland, 8. Colfox, of Is., and many others:. Several excellent and mew -1 tog songs were sung between the speeches. ThOspeechea were generally short, and direct to the purpoisi. Among the ineidents of the day were this ar rests of pickpockets, many of whom were said to be present. Three or four were caught and caged.' Great numbers of pockets were picked. One lady lost forty dollars; all she had. Major Dillock, of this; city, lost his pocket hook as I soon as he arrived on the ground, but the thief got bat little money, as he had taken the pre, esution to divide his funds. Colonel Leopold Sabl was lees fortunate, having hie pocket pick ed of some ninely, dallsre. The indicatione gathered from this great na- Lionel assemblage of Whip, are traly grettfying. I have conversed with great numbers of well ioformed men, from Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, New York and other /Dates, and endeavored to obtain their candid opinion as to the final result, nninfluenced by their wishes, and found that the most sanguine eapeatatione of s triumphant suc cess are everywhere entertained. The Whip of Ohio were never more active, enthusiastic, and determined dab now. They have taken avian measures to secure so of organisation in every part of the State, and they labor in the cause with the heartiness, zeal end serioutmess of men who feel that they have a good and emi nently patriotic work to perform. Great num bers of freesoil Whip are returning back to their old fold. This is unquestionable, whatever may he said to the contrary. I myself save the hearty congratulations of several influential gen tlemen who had stood together on the Buffalo brui, who 'grapped each other's hands In fervent pledge to labor hereafter in the g cause. Mr. CHARLES ELLET is Out again in the North American, with another moat virulent attaos up on Gen. Robinson and the Ohio and Pennsylva nia Railroad. Tho artiola is characterized by the deadliest malignity, and the most desperate recklessness. The statements made about the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad are so stupidly fabricated, and so grossly untrue, that every ,person who has the least knowledge of the mat ter must necessarily writs Mr. Eliot down as a wilful falsifier, or what is as bad in a Civil En• ginoer, stating that for fact , which is oaly the offspring of his own perverted imagination, or that of others. lie lays down twelve proposi tions, which he promises to enter upon and prove, every one of which is grossly false, and some of them are such bold assertions that they defeat themselves, and are sufficient utterly to ruin the character of any Civil Engineer who would`make them. We will gigs one single quo tation to show the malignity, unfairness, and falsehood of this man. Speaking of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad, he says: "It twists ghoul through Me Western Reserve, and will doribtleta — necommodate many farms, and convoy much cheese and butter, and other similar commodities to the ritlsye stores along the In the fierceness of hie vindictive temper, Mr. Ellet hue here gone eo far as to destroy the ef fect of any thing he has to say. The disparage ment is so sweeping, no thorough, that it reacts upon the writer. Every man feels that the statement must be, that it is, unjust. Every person with even a superficial knowledge of the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad, knows that the statement in these few lines is wholly false, but the distant reader may not know how much 'falsehood is couched in them. What will he think then, when we tell hlm, that this Ohio end Pennsylvania Railroad, which Mr. Ellet says, "twists about through the Western Reserve," does not touch the Western Reoccur at all, but keeps throughout its entire length upon the tier of counties immediately Reath of the Reserve, and nowhere goes out of this range, to the ono side or the other If thie Civil Engineer, who has undertaken the task of writing down the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad, to no little ac quainted with it as nut to understand even its geographical position, whet confidence can be placed upon hie reeklees and vindictive user, tions regarding its business and other matters less within his knowledge? Ifor the Pittsburgh Casette.] MO. EDITOR—Our attention has been directed to nu article in the Gazette of the 213th Inst., purporting to be a report of.a r discuseion of the colonization !clime. held' in New Brighton, -a few days ago. The article appears without ei• ther the name or residence of .he author. This doubtless, So has thought prudent to coniceil from the public, inasmuch as he has chorea to give his own version of the discussion, rather than an impartial statement of facts which he must or ought to hue known. Respecting the origin and result of this meet ing we beg leave to say a few words, in order to correct what we conceive to he a palpable mit representation.. At • colonisation meeting held to hear an address from the Rev. R. R. lively, a aeries of resolutions were introduced, declaring the colonization echeme to bo one of "comers: heneive benevolence to the oolored people of this country:" also recommending Mr. Stanley's bill, appropriating the public rands for coloniza tion purposes. The mover of these revolutions . stated that his objedt in .introducing them was to elicit discussion, and as we supposed, to cre ate an excitement, as an effort bad a short time before been made to raturrtetionize the deadear case of colonization, which had been regaedea al a "humbug," zm obnoxious to the citizens, that an organization could not be formed for want of men to fill the offices. Owing to the lateness of the hour when the result:olons were offered; it wee deemed prudent to hold an ad journed meeting, the abolitionists not anticipa ting it diectosion. We dissent then from your correspondents' assertion — that the adjourned meeting wee held mealy to afford LibettY men so opportunity "to rally their orators." We willingly accepted the invitation •to dis cuss the subject, because we believed that it Was. only necessary that it should-be exposed in or der that It might be universally detested by every tree friend of the elare. Colonization is represeoted in the North so the enemy to slave ry, while in the South it is regarded as its safe guard. Henry Clay, long its President, and identified with its early existence, may be re garded as a fair exponent of its objects and principles. He declared that it was "foreign to the objects of the society to effect emancipation either gradual or immediate," or "to affect the tenure by which the master held a certain spe cies of hia property." Ile also asserted in a letter addressed to Richert! Pindall that he was "opposed to any scheme or emancipation which did not contemplate colonization." Mr. Stanley, of N. C., who introduced the bill, which Mr. (Duly so anxiously desired the people of New Brighton to endorse, actually voted for the Fu gitive Slave bill, converting the freemen of the North into _blood hounds to catch the panting fugitive as ho makes his escape from American slavery, One hour of which Jefferson 'said was worse than ages of that which our ,fathers re belled against. SLaveholders understand colonization to sus tain the same relation to slavery that the valve does to the engine; that its tendency is to fos ter prejudice against the slave population and thus rivet their chains tighter, Is evident from its early litatory, and that elaveholders wish to remove the free blacks merely to make- slave breeding more profitable is clearly seen from their epeeches and reports. When Mr. Etobillson read from the speech of Mr Stanton, delivered at the last annual meeting and printed by order of the Colonisation Society with' their annual report, in order to ebow from their own dun• ment the tight in which the south regarded this scheme, ho was called to order by the Rev. Mr. Quay, because he- Said, the Society never had endorsed the address. strange login! And yet Dir.Btanton was their chosen orator on that occasion, nod, his address published by order of Of the Society, eccompanying their annual report. The President sustained the objection, thus rul ing out documentary evidence, not on the ground of irrelevancy, but giving as a reason that "the affirmative had produced no documents, theref ore the' negative could riot have the privilege." It may appropriately be naked, " Whom think ye was friend to him that fell among thieves?" The effort of your correspondent to ettigmatise the audience as 'Spirit Rappers,' advocates of. e Women's Rights,' and disciples of every other standard humbug, is ungentlemanly In the ex treme, and -well deserves a screen to hide him from the ,publio gaze. This only shows the means to which men will resort to sustain a sinking cause. A more respectable meeting, in point of numbers, character and intelligence has rarely been convened hero. Most of the au dience remained, and there was not a half desert persons present who were Identified with the re forms alluded to. The resolutions were rejected by a largo majority of the audience present, mach to the mortification of colotilzationists who were consoled by the fact that the "Mende could meet again and pane them." The assertion that after adjournmemt a dumber of persons who heretofore had been consistent members of the Liberty party unto forward and professed to be convinced of the tuperlortolloy of colonization,' in without the 10141 t 131:M/OW of foundation, and could 'only have originated in the heated Imagi nation of an anthntimet.
