PITTSBURGH GAZETTE
MONDAY MORNING, JULY k 1862
THE SOUTHERN HOLUM-,
The New York Tribune has some spicy com
ments on tne Hanifeeto of Messrs. Tomlo; Ste
phens, k-Co from which we take the following
extritcti.
So with the Sue gentlemen who sign titeir
Manifesto. Not one of them was elected to ibis
CaIMKT', as a Whig, or upon a Whig nomink
tion. All were nominated and chosen by thek.
'Union' party, founded on the renunciation and $
annihilation of the Whig party of their respec
tive States. Mr. Brooke is a Senator, chosen
by the votes of togislators now open and neat
ens for Pierce :and King. Ste. Faulkner. was
elected as a .driion' man, but, long before the
Whig National Convention assembled, and while
he had good matron to suppose Mr, Fillmore
would, be its candidute, he expreeely repudiated
the Whig party as not soffidently pro-Slavery,
and went over to the .camp of the Shari Demi,
erne,. Ile evidently means to be the regular
Opposition candidate for Congress in hie Die
trict at the \ next eleetion—and "did es before
Gen. Scott *as nominated.
Now that \these gentlemen are opposed to
Gen. Scott's election, wo can very well under
stand: but whak right have they to council or
speak - for the great party which they long since
Mentioned? Whji Might not Senators Bunter,
Sumner and Chase, and Messrs. Dailey, Charles
Allen, Giddings, and half a dozen others, who
base dropped off from time to time during the
last dozen years—some because we were too
much, others because' we were too little Anti-
Slavery—cot and rem:tithe the Whig party be
cause of Gen. Scott's nomination, as the signers
of the nbeve manifesto hero done? Does not
the above demonstrations Wealth a virtual frond,
ns if Capt. Itynders and Johnny Actetin, and
Yankee Sullivan were to grail!) , set forth that
the nomination of Gen. Scottthltd rendered their
further co-operation with thaWhig party impos
eible?
We epeak not here of Means". Gantry and Wil-
Hama, who were recently Whigs, and we hope.
still will be. We 'believe they win : yet recog
aim the propriety of eepporting Otto. Soots,
and do it heartily. But even were they to hold
off, we cannot 'believe that Tennease will go
against him . She was very nrgent-that tiorth
ern Whigs should anstain her favorite General
last time, hervelf giving him more than eight
thousand majority. We do not believe there're
any five men who can deprive Oen. Scott of '4l
that mnjogity. But Messrs. Gentry and Wil;
liams are atrong man, and hitherto steadfast'
Whigs. T 4,, have a right to counsel Whigs,
and Gieir counsel or 'remonstrances are entitled
to respectful consideration' blesses. Toenail.,
'Stepson , stand on nn` , entirely different
footing.
The difficalty in the else ig , that Gen. Beata will
not pledge himself to proscribe and treat as en
emies those Whigs who exercising the same lit,
crty that they freely accord to him, dislike-same
features of the Fugitive Slave Law. If he would
only agree to make the finality - of the Compro
nnen the tomehstone cf States for office under
ma administration, and promise . to hold every
Free defier unfit for any appointment, he might
possibly be favored with the support of. Mr.
Toombs no his totting squad,. however much
or little that might be worth. lie could wio
them yet by agreeing to breakup the Whig
party and join their little segment of a
'Union' party—union "on the basis of treating
every loser of Universal Freedbm as a disunion
ist Lacking this asenrance, the eitetailsgo thee'
the motions of renouncing the' Whig party once
were: We only ask that they shall now stay
out, and nevermore protcuil to be in for the
sake of geieg through the farce of .lAching out
