ROMIEHY or TOO EASTERN MAIL.—The mail
bag aiutaioing the letters mailed in this city on
the 81 instant, for Philadelphia, was out open
on the care, and Its contents extracted. Many
'contained remittances, the amount of which it is
at present impossible to estimate, though it Mint
be immense. Messrs. Harris, Jones, Mg King
and other bankers, lose small amounts, rebottled
on that-day. A letter mailed by General Lan--
Mee, f or Drexel h. Co., and containing $2,095,
was dropped by the thief on the bottom of the
car, picked up by a piateUger, ithq heeded it
to the conductor, and it arrised 'at its destine

remanded.
Commonwealth vs. Elizabeth Bache. Indict
ment malicious mischief John T. Cochran,
'Rag., appeared for the Commonwealth, and Jas.
• K. Kennedy, Egg., was appointed to defend the
prisoner.
Mr. Henry Richardson and one of his ap
prentices, prove! that on the 30th of April the
defendant broke a valuable pane of ginger:rids
window, of the nine of s4o_ The defence set
gip was that of insanity. A sister of the de
fendant was called, who proved that for many
years she had been, at Intervale, deranged. Mr
Fox, the County 'Jailor:. Captain Elerriot,
Drawer of the Poor House, and'ldr. Joseph .
Randolph, a police officer , proved - variotis acts
of insanity on ber part.
Daring the progress of the trial, some closer

Mo' Sticre.—On Tuesday night J. T. Hutch
inson, of the Ninth Ward, shot William Squires
under the following circumstances?' Squires
I rented a house from Hutchinson, and paid the
i rent in advance,but the wives of the parties har
ing quarrelled, his landlord built a fence around
an oven of which the former had enjoyed the use .

, parties, and on Tuesday while Hutchinson was
atthe Court of Quarter Seseions, Squires tore
down the fence around the oven. Hutchinson
returned while he was thus engaged, and rush
ed into hie house, brought out on old musket
which ha carried in the late. war with Great
Britain, and calls Andrew Jackson, and fired it
nt hie opponent, the charge, (a heavy load of
elot) taking effect in his breast. Fortunately
he had his hand and arm over it, sod most of
the shot struck them. Dr. Ahl was called in arid
dee/teed the wounds, which are serious, thongh
he thinks his patient out of danger.
Old Hutchinson retired to his Cortexes which
he barricaded, reloaded Andrew Jackson and a
pinto', and defied the officers to street him.—
After a good deal of difficulty they succeeded in
capturing him without sustaining any injury,
and after an examination before Alderman Mc•
Cane of the Ninth Wird, he wis committed to
prison. Owing to a wound received at the bat
tle of New Orleans, the prisoner's scull was tre
panned, and he isthought now to be insane. lie
is very litigious, quarrelsome and dangerous, and
ehonld he confined either in a lunatic Asylum,
BD:mime, or in the penitentiary -if hie violence
proceeds merely from a malicious nod wicked
temper.
