" IGNORANCE =MARY TO PROTESTANT DM" Tho 'Pittsburgh, Catholic of this week. hae editorial article under the above caption, from which we take the opening paragraph. Here it is: “Protestantiam slaking rapidly, end hail, been sinking diner the first fifty years of its ex; Istelde. Why It is passing away is no unsolved . .Problem. It is no more • question of specula tion thou the cause of its origin, and a knowl edge of the one is an explanation of the other.. Dorn of the worst pasaions of human nature, it ham lived but by appeal, to these, and its steady' decline is a consequence of this fact; for error cantiot triumph over truth. Now, truth Most triumph; its progress, it is true, may bo retarded for a time by the shifts of error, lint its victory is ultimately certain. Protestantism* Is verifying this foot. It retains no longer with. in Its destructive limits, conscientious thinking men, ears by the power of ignorance. The po tency of this means is all it has to rely open. and ripen once its professors cease to exert them @etre.? in its exercise, they will have no reason to boast of the numbers or character of those who will remain with them.” • Does the writer of the at?ove believe what be sayt! As ignorance ie - Tess disgraceful than falsehood and deception, we shall in charity take it for 'created that be does; but it is altogether one of the most curious products of en abated and stultified intellect that we. ever met with One of the crying ales of Protestantism, in the eyes of Catholics, le that it removes all shackles from the mind of man, and bids him roam at nil through all the gelds of knowledge. It givesto c, mar, as the most valuable inheritance of his birthright, the privilege of private judgment. Do the Catholic eleigy giVe to their people the same privilege and the eameoncooragensritt with regard to the produe. . tiliss of Protestintst The motto of the one is. "Prove all things, and hold fast to that which is , good•" that of the other' requires a surrender of the reasoning faculties, and the reception of the dermal, of the church without their being , put through that ordeal. Protestants know what • Catholics teach, or if they do not, his their own fault; but will the editor of the Catholic dare to tell us that the laity of his church have equal privileges—that they may read ProtZstant books or hear Protestant preachers at will? If not, then he mast acknowledge that the church com• pets he people to remain in ignorance of what they ought to know. It is impartible, in the . silky things are , convinced in tbeCetholie Church, that its people can obey the apostolic injunction to "prove all things." Wilt he say that the. If so, then in. stead of ignorance being necessary to Protest autism,' it is shown to be an essential element in the opposite system. The Fillmore meeting in New York woe nu merously attended, bat the heart and soul which inform living manes when their enthusiasm 'is fairly aroused, werepalpably wanting. The new cry set up, that the south must and will stand by its northern friends, that it must allied them friths the host of Abolitionists, Is very specious, but it wont do. The smith has never ehown any particular gratitude to' its friends, though it Mu sometimes extended a sort of contemptuous patronage to the more devoted of its northern servants, when slavery talks of protecting its northern instruments, it only stoops to conquer. Martin Van Buren sacrificed himself in its service, and when the north threw him off, for that very cause among others, he got a more or two of votes at the south, though the chief objection to his competitor 'in that quarter was, that he was an Abolitionist. Ilun kers,-Bilier Greys, Doughfaces, repair to the Shades of Lindenwold, and 4,000,000 20.000.000 1,000,000 , 500,000 04,500,000 5124.000,000 - "view the ground Whore you must shortly lie." It is my deliberate belief that so meek of the slavery issue as is left will he totally dead at the south by the time the election comes round, and that Gen Scott will run about es well there as if no Boob question existed. The man who now talks of northern aggressions upon the south is a fool or an impudent knave, and the day is at hand when he will be scouted as such from the Susquehanna - to the Rio Grande. Not that the slavery question is dead, but it is sus pended—when it revives it will be la the shape of measures Opposed for the repression and punishment for outrages by southern States and southern men upon tho rights and liberties ct northern citizens. Pennsylvania will lead the way in demanding Indemnity for the past and security for the future. No, this Southern opposition to General Scott may be eaeily disposed of. The Southern men ought not only be . eatiellod with him, but pro foundly grateful that they can get him. Lot the notapurs end bantams strut and fret their hour out; and they will end by coming up to the work as quietly and kindly as others who make lees noise.
