DIIIMITILLI TO Sarre.—On Sunday five raft.
were 'wrecked on the piers of the Alleghetty
bridges and lost. Last' evening a fine log raft,
with three men on it, Ca2llo' down. With great
skill they Managed to steer clear of the piers of
the upper bridge, the aqueduct, and the Head

struck a pler of the St. Clair Street bridge. The
shoek.wasao great that it parted all the fasten

great activity. and; presence of mind the men
sprang upon the bridge and thus saved their
lives, although thy lost their property.
The ices of lumber, by this flood is ane:am•

Tate rise vie so use:pooled; so sudden, and eo

from being swept off. We understand that Mr.

the lessee in lumber at $lOO,OOO.

Dear Sir: 7 A carefrd examination of the Ohio
and Pennsylvania Railroad has been made to
day from Pittsburgh to New Brighton, in refer
ence to the effects of the extraordiniry flood.—
I Muted down the line about, six o'clock this
morning and ietumed at are in the evening.
As fax as Sewickley the examination was male
by me, and below that place by Mr. Warner the
President Engineer. I found the culverts, the
road bed, and the track generally in good order,
but enough earth and stone washed down upon
the track to require twelve hours 'to remove IL
Along the narrows the water was below the
level of the track from four to seven feet. In
nu Fuson was the river up to the road.
I [mind nothing out of Order that could
not be tepalied in a few hours of good wea
ther. .
Mr. iti.inteett report woo similar to the row
of my own cbservatiohs, e*oepting that he
stated that the water was within two feet of
the road inthe village of Freedcm, and that a
small piece of:retaining wall bad blipped down
at , llocheater. lie thought that, if twining - ,
worse occurred, the road would, he in running

sion. Wchare a large force at woes and are
doing all we ..can, in the midst of the heavy
rain. The flood is behoved, to be the highest
