I - Ma. Dorsett—l meet the fallowing paragraph
in a late letter in .your paper, from your New

"A verdict has been given lathe United States
Court against 'Tappan tt Douglass, - the propeid

association to watch country traders; in order
to protect city meichanta from frandulenteme

dollars, the jury very properly thinking it on for any such system of ennatnercial
espionage to be toloratA in New York. This.
agency has its agents all over the country, gen
erally lawyers, who furnish their principals
with alt the gossip about town relative to mer-.

of their wives. This Is all recorded here, and

In justice to the highly reputable founders of
the New York Mercantile Agency and its
branches in the principal commercial cities of
the Malted States, and to the thousands of gen

all over the country, who act as attorney; and

In truth, the information Is any thing but

intended to be in all, of facts fully ascertained.

The system of "espionage,"• as poet corree

era of the city jobbers. Corresponding infor

The beaficial operation of the. Agency ank7:

teocee, particularly, is well understood by those

Prior to its establishment, the lossie by that

jets of Pittsborgiveutrir from that cause far of
tener than those tifithe cities wherein the Agency
audits branches are Qstablishid, and ten times
as often tie the subscriber: to atom. . •
If the present system of buying- on credit to
aell again, is to be cuutitined, well would it ba
fur all credit-worthy merchants and for the.
commtinity dt large, if branches were estaii-
Hatted in every' jobbing city, reliable corres
pondents employed in erery Tillage, and aser7
jobber a subscriber; and unless cash purchases
ere substituted, "to tbis complexion it roust,
come at last." , .
•
I say better for community at large, because
so long as jobbers are subjeetsd to the henry
losses from fraud and inaolleuey which the great
majority of them edit tocoutizer, there Must bo
eintelderableamounte included in their general,
prices, by way of insurance, and paid of course, :
Itt the end, by tilobody of the at:ilium - 6m,
Protect the jobbers as far may be done,
against those losses, and goods could, and,
therefore, on the : fixed principles of dude,
would be afforded to consumers at probably from
ten to twenty per cent. less than- new.. The
protettion is, therefore, Ice, for them than for
the people at large.
What, then, Is the objection to an-institution
for affordinelt, What is the objection to the
Mercantile Agency, which affords it
-with less Injustice to Indiddifele tbjux other in
strumentality yet deviled! Itegnes may well
object to it, but honest men !should not..
