= "Spontaneous Meetinga," we wrote, because
most of the meetings which have been held in
behalf of Hungary, have been 50 held with ref-.
erence t, the pereonil presen ce of th e get ,
❑uogdrieu Chief, wad because the meeting of
which we have now the gratification too speak
wan one or pure spontaneity. It originated in
a lore of the Magyar's cause, end in to hope,
that its ,rubjects might bagratthed by listening
to his words, or even by getting a glimps of hot
person. And such meetings, it is delightful to
rind, are getting to be somewhat general. The
nue to which we refer 11119 held at aleadville,
l'enneyiviana A series of eight well drawn les
0111t10101, instinct with right' sentiments, were
ably discussed, and, we believe onaimonsly adopt
al Rut we can afford space for only en much
Of the proceedings of the meeting as we find in
the following speech of Prof. James Freeman
Clark. Prot, [flask, was formerly of Boston,
arid few gentlemen of the clerical profusion are
more widele or more favorably known to the
semidry There is no denying the existence of a
prevalent and prevailing impression, that "the
salt of the earth' . has largely •lost his savor".
But that impression will be speedily dissipated
when the golden rule of Christianity shall have
come to be enforced by every clergyman,• omit
is 'inforeed in this speech, and, we will add aS
we have known it to be enforeed 'on many an
othor occasion by the learned and eloquent an
ther. We copy it from the Meadville Whig Jour
nal:
'•The call' for this meeting invites us' to con
,eider in what way we may expreesour sympathy
with Hungary and the Hungerians. The mem
bers of this meeting, therefore, may lie suppos
ed all to feel a sympathy with the wrongs of
Hungary. But they may bate different opini
ons as to how that sympathy ought to be ex
pressed. We meet to take counsel on that point
hut there may be those present, as there are
those hi the country elsewhere, who, though
they sympathise with the oppressed Hungarians,'
think that we, as, notion, ought not to inter
fere in their behalf. They tell tut that wd must
avnid entangling alliances—that we shall be
come iniolved in European wars; and that they
consider it the great mission of this Republic to
take care of itself.
Now the-resolutions I have jest read, lay down
principles which, if true, make it both our right
sod duty, to take an interest in the affaire of
foreign nations to obtain independence and free
hatitutioes; and they also assert that this in.
terest ought to ho expressed. In what 1 have
to say I will consider these points:
First, then * , there is such a thing as the law
of nations, whiali every nation has a direct In.
tereat in maintaining. The nations of the world
compose one, great commonwealth of thaws; rind
this commonwealth has its public law. This
public law hoe always existed wherereicivilita-
LlOll has existed; and its general obligations
have never been questionedl- Without it, states
• could not exist at all; and they exist happily and
peacefully iu proportion as this law is better un
derstood and obeyed. Its principles have been
laid down by (Retina Puffendorf, Hobbs, Vat-
Lel, and other great writhe. According to this
law, nations are not like wild beasts; with lib
etty to plunder and destroy as they will, bat
eery nation a moral person, having immuta
ble obligations and denies to every other. the
friend, of peace ore looking forward to the lime
when the law of nations shall be publicly and
solemnly established in a code, by a congress of
delegates assembled for that purpose from all
ci Mired State,: and when / every infraction of
that code atoll be examined before a High Court
of Nations appointed to settle all intonational
disputes--but till that time comes, every notion
is bound to prevent, if it can present, all infrac
tion of public law.' Far nations are based not
ou power alone, 'oat on justice; and when Lojus
tice is dons to any people, all suffer with it.
For this reason, then, as members of a nation
belonging to the great commonwealth of Ms.
tient, we are b0 , 111,t to sympathise with Hun
gary... Public law was struck down,•in the per
eon of Hungary, whoa the Russian armies Inva
ded it. A trocedent was established which, 'so
far, if not. opposed, would go to justify a like
outrage on the people of every other land.
Again; as Republicans, we ought to feel sym
pathy with linagary, and.sorrow for her down
fall IVo enjoy the blessing of free iastitntioos,
free press, power of self-taxation, election of
our own rulms, enactment of /ie own laws, ee
entity of property and person. Here is a na
tion, struggliug heroically for the •ealne rights,
struck doe, by the armies of an ebsolute des
pot. Is that ito concern of our? :Have we no
sympathy, no interest for such a struggle? •
And again, to iake a still higher ground, are
we not bound, WA Christiana, to consider all men
es our brethren"! Have Christian nations any
mire right to make selfishness their law than
Christian individuals:. A Roman poet mice said,
'•t tam a man, end nothing which belongs to a
man is foreign to to me,' and at the utterance
of these words the whole immense audience of
the Roman Theatre rose to their feet in ascent
and admiration. Shop we, as Christians, feel
lave than they 7
tint yen may,-perhaps, this is all very well; it
is right to feel sympathy, but very dangerous
tonic any thing more. We should be involved
in tier, in entangling alliances, which Washing
ton advised U 3 against. We shall havirro•gdon
Quixotic orusadea in behalf of Ireland, Rome,
and Franco, who are all oppressed too. To e;-
press our opinion would do no good if we were
not ready to follow it up with "rat.. To give a
little money will do no good, if we are not ready
to give a great deal.
To all this I answ, r, we are not asked to
go to nat. Wo are asked to express our opin
ion to the world. Is them no power in opinion
—no power 10-thy flea , no Kossuth says,
"even bayonets think." fa the only power in the
world material!' Far more true would it be to
say that the only power in the wort,' is spiritual
—the power of Thought. "The time has been,'
Nun Daniel Websterwhen asking that the
United States should express its opinion in be
half of struggling - Greece—"the time bas . been
that fleets and armies were thought to be the
only - support even for a good cause; but, hap
pily for mankind, there has come a great change
in this respect." The 'public opinion of the
civilized world is a power to-day which the
mast absolute despot dare not defy; for he
knows that no fortress, no fleet ; no armies can
resist this invader. 'lt enters his palace, and he
reads it inithe faces and words of his courtiers,
and- his own wife and children. Ikentters his
armies; and he can rely on them no longer in
an unjust war. It undermines his throne and
the foundations of his palace tremble. Subtle
and pervasive as the atmosphere, he breathes it
himself, and stands aelf.condemned before its {
judgtn eat. For he, too, is a man, puil the 'great
voice of humanity must arouse it echo In his
conscience. '
But Waahington told to to avoid enta:ngling
alliances. When the nations of Europe were
engaged,in ruinous and protracted warn, it
true that he advised us not to engage In them;
and he did well, and. his advice is good still.
But did he tell us, that baring asked - ana re
ceived help in our weakness, when struggling
for our own independence, that we were to re
fuse it to other nations - in like situations, when
we became powerful, rich, and Independent?
The man who Imputes such a thought to Wash
ington ehmders the (other of his country.
We naked of France in our poverty a few
arms,u little ammunition, and she gave them,
and so wo were enabled to bring the war of the
Revolution to o speedy mad euceeuful termina
