cles, which are admitted free in Great Britain,
ere taxed froth fire tothlrty per cent.: Barilla
10; alum and copper, 20; gum arabic, seuegal,

15; lodines and other non-enumerated 'articles,

last degree absurd, unless it be the, object of
Congress to repress and cripple our manufac

Britain since the destruction of our , protective
tariff, it is sufficient to state that the quantity

system commenced, was 467,8213,800 pounds,
while in 1849 it had increased to 758,841,650
pounds. During the same period, and subse -
quently, the consumption of cotton has actually
diminished in the United States. Why the leg•

interests are most injuriously affected, should
