but by no Means incredible. Assuming it to be

As spring approaches the present is a gPod

It may be useful, too, to mention that the

full of hope for with the abundance of money
in the country there can be little doubt but that

we most not omit to mention that every man en

demand; but large hopes are entertained that
Louis Napoleon, with the view to cultivate some
popularity, will lowey the duty for the admis

between liberty and despotism in Europe, being
the result of oar own glorious example, we owe
it as 'a duty , to ourselves—to our principles and

our part, to prevent derpotteinterference, has not

that Congress might now declare. that by the

be a violation of that law, and would justify any
other nation in interfering to prevent it.

TIM COLD IVIATDEU err LITZ HOUTll.—Extract
of a letter front a young gentleman to his father
In this city, dated
Matta, Ala, Jan. 20, 1862.
"Toward the end of lost week it moderated
somewhat., and on Hnudayitbeeamequite warm,
with thethermometer at 72°. lathe afternoon
it commenced raining, tliewind veered to the
north-west, and at 9 P. M. it hailed; at mid
night the wind howled fearfully, towards morn
ing it cleared up, and at daybreak the thermom
eter was at 200.. Oh! a terrible dayWasjester
day We sat and etudied and studied and eat;
to write was nearly impossible, every thing was
roue of Ice. You who have such weather for
months have gotfin accustomed to It Your
bonne are close and warm, but fancy the , poor
mortals here who have scarcely ever seen ice
except - what I. imparted from Boston, whose
houses are ell windows and doors, with a sprink...•
ling of brickwork between. Fancy, their feel
ings! Clothes were of n o account; ;oar bodies
were not warm enough to heat' the' clothes--
Well, that was bad enough. I went home and
to bed it the usual time, and rolled Myself op
hedge.hog fashion. In the ojght I dreamed I
bad a crumbling of the bones, occasioning in
tellect pain in my legs, and waking I found that
my legs were nearly frozen, though I had plenty
of eoverlide on me. At last I hit upon rk reme
dy, and got betneen two blankets and -rolled
myself tight in them and. managed to keep olive
till morning. When I got up I found it colder
and colder, end pouring out Ole water to wash,
it trove in ' the basin, and I rished in ice. But
no wonder, the thermometer stood at 9° at half
past six A. M.! Two gentlemenwho bad the
good luck to haVaelcatee have gone out skating;
the like wee never known hero before.", -•

Ptsosnro EVICILYMODS.—Gov. Bigler has made
Francis W. Hughes, Secretary of the Common
weOlth, and Frank hes appointed B. S. Good
rich, Deputy: Sesretary. Here is s worthy trio.
Bigler is a sort of free trader, but keeps a sharp
leek out to see where the party will stand, eo
that he can adapt himself to eircumstonces.
Bughes is in favor of modification of the exist-
Gag revenue laws, whilst Goodrich is an out and
our free trader, and goes for .forty.six' and no
thing else. Bigler acquiesces in the Compro
mise, Hughes occupies the same !platforiu, but
Goodrich is for free soil up to the hub. Again,
Bigler is a Buchanan man, Hughes goes for
CMS, and Goodrich throws up his cap for But
ler. Besides this worthy trio, we have Camp
bell, the defeated candidate for the Supreme
Bench; appointed Attorney General under the
new administration, in order to secure the Irish
Catholic influence and support! Thus we have
all factions represented in the new administra
tion—elements as opposite as the poles united
by one powerful bond—the" cohesive power of
public plunder."—Berke& Schuylkill Journal-
