The Bear Valley [ mine, of which we had seconnte some time ago, was one of these. Here is another account ,from the Calaveras Chronicle, brought by the 'EI Dorado: . The new diggings are culled Bp - oft Hill; from the fact that their extraordinary richness have tempted out nearly all the old sportsmen of our town, who may now be daily seen wielding pick and spade as lustily as the hardiest miner. It would:be treeless fairi us here to repeat any of the many extiavagent stories (none of which are contradioted,l that we have heard, of these ex traordinary diggings, bet we will mention what we knew by 'our own observation: The hole which created . the furore is one hundrod end ten feet deep, and commenced paying well at thirty-five feet from the ledge. We stood by while one of the party in this claim washed out some half dozen buckets of refuse earth, from which he obtained ten or twelve dollars of gold, one piece weighing upwards of eis. dollars This dirt was only washed to throw dust in the eyes of the crowd who stood around—the num ber I dirt being kept separate and reserved for future operations, when there shall be plenty of Water. The ruse, however, did not succeed, every one seeing through it at once, and only bocom int more firmly convinced of the vast wealth that loy hidden in the earth beneath their feet. The majority of the claims are being ' , worked with a will," and we shall soon know if the whOle full is rich," or If this one claim alone, it to yield fortunes' to its owners. Another hole lower down the bill Bide, has oommenced paying at seven feet from the surface, the own ers averring moat positively that they get from it fire dollars per bucket. A tunnel company has lase been formed,, and have commenced operations in the hill. Tho indications of gold here, are the some as those on French and Stockton Hills. FOTUEB MATIIETra itrrraz TO IRVIAZ Fittlit4 Matthew, on his return to Ireland from the Cuitcd States, was received by his country men with every demonstration of regard and esteem. The Common Council of Cork presen ted 'him with en address of congratulation, to which he responded in a speech of much feel ing and eloquence,' in the course of which he thus referred to the people of the United States, and the manner in which he was received by them. "No language, gentlemen, which you might frame, can sufficiently express the measure of our common obligation to the nehle-hearted and generous citizens of America, [hear, hear.]— You hid ocular demonstration of their boun- tiful sympathy, when, In the day of tribulation, yon witnessed in your magnificent barber, the .Star. DISORAunk uL 33315 H HIOI On Siturdaf morning last thiff city was again subjected to an excitement, originating from dis turbances between the Fardowne and Corkoni. ans. Some four hundred of the Fardowns were in aims, under the command cf Capt. (Kossuth) Collins, who, about S o'clock, A. M., made war like demonstrations—but hoeing en erereapply of spiritual:patriotism, the Sheriff hadhint un harnessed, and lodged in' jail. The Ferdowas thereupon left for their respective sections on the railroads under the protection of an armed police, who it appears were ',insufficient to pro -terse order or respect for the law. As soon_ as the Far-downs came within gun shot of the Corkoninn shanties. on Section 13, in the neighborhoodof Bloomfield. they com menced firing bullets into the habitations of their countrymen, who, in company with their .women and children, fed to the hills and form 110115115 for protection. When the shanties were depopulated, the Far downs entered, took possession of whatever they .fiotild carry off, destroyed what they could not, and set two shanties on fire end burned them up. Newt was received in the city on Sunday morning of these outrages, and that the rioters consisting of some 460 men, tt t e most of whom were armed) hod precededdown the line—to take the whole by Aorta and fire the shanties —to prevent which themilitary were called out, and in company with some two or three hundred citizens, "armed to the teeth"—repaired to the field of action with all possible speed—deter mined to bring the offenders to terms—but by the time they bad reached the scene of the out rages, the Fardownere bad taken the beck track and returned as they had went by the Cadiz road, instead of by the riser route. Ac they entered the city. the Mayor promptly disarmed as many of them as was possible,-in the street —the balance he followed to the hotels and oth er places of retreat and took possession of their -weapons, which should have been done weeks ago. It is high time the city and county were freed from this eternal izcitement, uproar and evi dent expense—if tbese Irish cannot conduct themselves in accordance with the laws of the land, to which other citizens hate to submit— let them be driven off the line. and chore em ployed who will.—§tesOrnrilfr Herald.
