We are ringing the knell oithe old year, and
greeting the *dint of the new;with the clang
of contention. The House in yet furiously
struggling over the simple-resolution for the of
ficial reception of GOT Kossuth. There is no
Prospect of s speedy dacha= The friends of
Koistoth and of freedom, are fatigued, are al

with the violent and tuumraptdons faction which I
are resisting action by the molt patty and con- I
teimptible shifts known in parliamentary ettate
gy; still they are in high spirits, and &tiptoe de
' tormiled to ova through thejrandution. The
minority are almost phrentied with excitement,
and yet timid„ for they fear the power beyond
the sphere of their petty passions, which is
closely watching their procsedinp, the power of
the people. One worthy gentleman has de
clared with frantic vehemence that be will re-.
rist to the last extremity, Parc and cistschers, the
stimaionment of the great American doctrine of
non Intervention. This, you Bee, is a significant
invitation to any adventortme.interverdionist to
take a trip with him to Bladensburg. It is en
necessary to ay that this bellicose gentleman is
from the 'tunny South, and that argument le not
:infrequently used with greet effect.
If the resolution pass tooilght, Kossuth eri
be presented to thellouss on Friday suet, the
day of its next meeting. ,
' Since the foregoing waswrittekt, the unseemly
and discreditable struggle in the House has ter
minated by its adjournment to IFridsy without
action upon the subject. At about eleven o'-
clock, 11r. Cuter, Who took the y lead in urging
the adoption of thrisolution, perceived the
hopelessness of the o ntest, and himself =tried
to adjourn. I have no doubt the AUStrilin and
Russian Bliastere, at the other nd of the ave•

'count of the mama in which i had been so
conspifued, with profound fop. Some of the
more sanguine friends of giving th suita

able to apply a proper corrective to this unman
ly slight, by the tintless of the Roue on Friday.
I do not expect any 4stch thing. When I heard
men by the clearest iMplicatlon denouncing the
revolution which gals ns a national existence,.

This has been. u uisnat, a day of festival,
rendered much more animated than usual by
the presence of the illustrious Kossuth. Re
has divided with . the President of the Republic
the attentions of our citizens. The annul New
Tear's levee et the While House, was exceesively
crowded, as it always is. It was supposed by
many that Kossuth would be among the visitors
Ibis morning, but it was not, the ease. lie would
undoubtedly have eagerly sought to witness thin
pleasing, and to him, novel spectacle, of the dare

and the people, but any arrangerient in which he
could have participated would necesearily have
interfered with the customary presentation of

would have leapt out of their laced and jew

You will have been informed through the

Another day hap been spent by the house of

is looked upon by every crowned oppressor, and
by every minion of such, ILI the champion of the
people in all lands, hie reception is opposed on
purely sectional grounds. The mast ere of Amer
