In Stinting some .money, the property of James
Deputy . AttorneyCeneral Flanegin stated to
the jury, that from 'all the imformati on he had
received, he, felt tistiAcd. that .the money had
been taken in jest, 11113 prosecuting witness and
defendant wero loth intoxicated at the time.—
The jury returned a verdict of "not guilty."
Commonwealth vs. James Elliott—lndictment
Larceny. The defendant, who was n little boy,
wee charged with steeling a dollar note, the pro
perty of William IL. Noble, of Sharpslihrgli. It
appearing that the defendant had taken a dollar
and n half in sillier, and the indictment setting
forth that Le had stolen a one dollar note, the
prisoner could not he convicted, and a venlict
of "not-guilty'? was returned.
His honor, Judge McClure, pointed out to the
defendant, the fully, as well as criminality of
the course of life which he Lad hitherto pursu
ed, and urged him to reform, after which he was
discharged.

swear positively as to his identity.
Two other witnesses corroborated his state
ments, but could, not identify thrprisoner.

at 12 o'clock to-day. She left Liverpool atnoon

The steam propeller, City of Pittsburg for
Philadelphia, railed from Liverpool on the tame

POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
FRANCE.
'The engrossing topic throughout Europe,
seems to be the approaching crisis of affairs in
France. Despite of the present evidences of
'the unmistakeable popularity of the President.
the Assembly seem... A-solved to force him into
direct collision. Egtry step token by the party
is evidently watched with intense interest by
the other countries of Europe
lin the L'tith the President delivered crosses
end menials to the anecinsfal French exhibitors
et the London Fair, and also - delivered a speech
well calculated to increase his popularity with
the moderate republican party, being the tint
speech in which any allusion wan made to the
Republio.
Many who have been devoted to the interests
of lien. Cavaignac, have declared their determi•
nation toAupport Louis Napoleon, as ,the only
means of saving the Republic.
An extraordinary article had appeared in the
Constitutionnel, wherein a direct attack was
made upon some of the highest names in France,
Changanier, M. tlerryrr, and others, who are
charged with being members of a secret com
mittee, having for its object the overthrow of
the government. The chief venom of the writer
seems to be directed against the Orleanist and
legitimist parties. No newspaper article ever
before produced no much excitement. it lend
to interrogations being addressed to the Minis
try, who were supposed to he aware of the pro
duction, if, indeed; they had not assisted in the
preparation of the article; and hence the excite
ment.
It Is generally believed that the demand for
urgency, with reference to the bill on the sub
jeet of the responsibility of the President, will
be refused by the Assembly.
Letters from Toulon repeat that Marshal Such
was unable to leave his bed.
French funds hod advanced, and at the latest
dates had still on advancing tendency.
- - PRUSSIA.
The Prussian Chambers would be opened by
the Commissioners on the day previously fixed.
No new taxes were to be declared, but an in
crease of the army was considered indisdensat

The new Austrian tariff comes into operation
on the first of ~Fehruary.

Cotton—The market was animated under the
.prospect of moderate imports,and reduced stock

same time, a large demand. Prices of ordinary
and middling' qualities had advanced about j, and

week were 59.000 bales of which 17,000 were ta
ken on epeculation, and 2,300 for export. Fair

are reduced to 394,000 bales; against 159,0011 at
the name time last year.
Breadstriffst—There is a fair demand for flour
for home consumption and for exports. West

American wheat is sought after at full prices.
Corn is doll, with sales of white at 24Ci.,:ltis,tand

materiel chkoge since the sailing of the Pacific.

coniidered favorable: and the weekly returns

their capital in the Australian money companies.
Consols, on Saturday morning, were Irdira,9B
Railway sharea wore advancing. There is little
doing in Foreign Stocks. American stocks are
unchanged, with few transactions.
There is an Increased activity in Manches
ter, and no improving demand both for goods
strut yarns.

Ifoues.—Mr. Disney was excused from een ,
ing on the Commiltee on Elections.
Mr. Phelps introduced a bill granting the
right of way, and public lands to hlissouri, for
the construction of Railroads from St. Louis to
the 'eaten lino of that State, which was re
ferred to the Committee on Public Lands.
Mir. Disney reported a bill regulating toll
on the Louisville end Portland Canal, and fo
purchasing the shares of individual stookhuld
ers anc, making navigation through that im
provement free. The bill was referred to th .
Committee on roads and Canals.
The house then went into a committee of the
whole on the President's Message, when,
Mr. Houston - offered a series of resolutions,
referring various branches of the Message to
appropriate committees.
Mr. Hall spoke in favor of the hill intro
duced by him., giving the right of way. and pub.
lic lands (or d railroad from Ilanitial to St Jo
seph, Mo.; showing the importance of such a
work, in a commercial point of view.
Mr. Sweetoer delivered his views on the sub.
jest of the public lands.
'Mr. j3issell announced his intention to sup
port Mr. il'l's bill.,
Tho Committee then rose, after which a com
munication was received from the War Depart
ment in relation to the modification of the sys
tem of fertilizations. It was read, when a de

SENATE —Mr. Miller gave notice of s bill
granting further remo lies to patentees.
Mr. Fish presented the petition of George
Talcott, late ot n the U. Stater A .- my, asking a
review, by Co geese, of the proceedings of a
court martial by which he was dismissed from
the service. Laid on the table.
Mr. Dodge, of Wisconsin. introduced a bill
for granting land for a railroad in that :state.
Mr. Fish submitted a resolution regnesting
the Secretary of War to communicate to the
Senate a copy of the proceedings of the Court
Martial in the cello of Cid. Teacart.

Mr. Elate was opposed to the resolution. Va
rious attempts had beta made to have the pro
ceedings of court roartials in eases of priests
sailors and soldiers' reviewed, but in vain. The
Senate had retests' tdeall for the proceeding...in
the caw, of the sailors put to death on the brig
Somers; and in the case of the court martial..
the private soldiers tried at Portsmouth, and
who were sentenced to most unheard of punish
meets.

TRIAL OF lIANWAY
PLIILADELPIIIA, Dec. 11.
The trial of Caen:tor Ilanway, under charge
of treason, in being concerned in the resistance
of the laws at Christiana, was concluded to day.
Mi. Cooper having finished his closing argu
ments about 12 o'clock, Judge Grier charged
the jury at great length, and they soon after re
tired. After being out about 10 minutes, they
returned a verdict of "not guilty." The prison
er was accordingly discharged.
• All the other indictments for treason have
been abandoned, and the prisoners have been
discharged. ,
