demolish .their fortress when ho should be re
leased by the civil authorities.

'art Mitchell, made a enrage assault last Satur
day, on John Wallace, in a carpenter's ,hop
situated in the Sixth Ward. Ile seized a hatchet
and' inflicted a ghastly wound with it, on poor
Wallace's baud, felling him to the earth, and
so severely hajuring him, that his recovery is
pronounced huposaible.
Mitchell was arrested, and taken before Al
derman Major, b,t. whom he was committal to
jail for filriher hearing.

thorighrhe is still in a very critical condition.

The Court was occupied the entire day, on
Saturday, In hearing the arguments of counsel,
in the case - of Mrs. Isaac Gregg so. Isaac Gregg.
A writ of de lunatico ingnirendo, had been
prayed for, which was tried some time ago, be
tire the Hon. W. W. Irwin, Commissioner. The
juryampannelled in the case, returning avcrsict
findinellr. Gregg sane.
The counsel for the relator, thereupon filed
eiceptions to the report of the, Commissioner,
which game up for argument on Saturday. No
dechfion has been pronounced.

Comities Tioutsx.—Coroner Arthurs, held
an inquest on Friday last, on the body of John
Daley, a Scotchman, at the boarding house of
Mrs. Bradshaw, Pitt Alley, Allegheny, who had
died suddenly on Thursday evening', when in the
act of drinking a glass of water. Drs. Dickson
and Horton, made a post portem examination
of hie remains, and testified that in their opinion,
the.deceased had come to his death from the
effects of pulmonary apoplexy. A verdict 10

that effect Was accordingly rendered by the Jury.
Itoonear:—Tho house of kris. Niemae, Smith
field street, was entered by some reseal in bread
day light, last week, and 'fifteen dollars and a

A fire broke out last night, on the corner of
Union and Main sle., burning out Mra. Edmond
son's confectionary. Alderman & Maxwell's hoot
and shoe store, Bowser, tobaconist, Baird's paint
shop, Clemen's cabinet rooms. and Armstrong's
lottery office. Alderman A: Maxwell's lase was
covered by insurance.
The fire, at one time, threatened to destroy a
large number of dry goods stores, an the wind
was blowing strongly in that direction.
