some whit roughly handled by the people, and
the boat went ou without him. In relation to
the matter the'Free Trader says:
"We wish to call atient inn to one fact, and that
is, that in all their steps „in this transaction,
neither Mr. Skinner nor any of his abettors had

The Ploughing Match created considerable in
terest. ( Numerous ploughs *ere entered, and
the plongh men represented various portions of
the country. The ground selected for the match
was adjoining the fair, and contained 20 acres,
of good soil. Among the ploughs entered, were
several of Proutly S Moor's of Roston; Sinclair's,
of Baltimore; Hall & Spear's, of Pittsburgh; Haw
ley's, of Montgomery; and Greeter's, of Cumber
land. The . ploughing generally was good, but
the award of premiums have not yet been made.
Our. Johnston, Ex-Governor Ititner, and
Judge Jessup, were on the ground.
After the ploughing match, the premiums Lof
stock, &c., were awarded. James . Gowan, of
Philadelphia, took the premipm for the best Dur
ham bull over three years old.
Henry Sherboine's stallion •U. K. Polk," took
the prior. Also, the French Morino Sheep of
A. L. Singhlrn : of Vermont.
?tr.Coil:nick's reaping machine was again
successful.
Proutly & Barrett's double plough took th
premium.

for baring the largest display of agricultural in

The awards being over, the address was next
delivered, nt the Capital; by lion. Andrew Ste
venson, of Virginia, which waa an able and elo
quent one_ Ile commenced by comparing agri
coltu7e with commerce and manufactures, as
sources of national wealth and greatness. While
he did not seek•to depreciate the importance of
commerce and manufactures, he felt that the
true basis of a nation's wealth is in its agricul
ture. t •

ture is the Souresi:Of British power. During
her war with PrOce, she—derived from the
products of her soli' The enormous sum-of six
and a half millions pounds sterling; from all
otter sources only three millions two hundred
trionsand pounds.
The reason of the superiority of Great Bri
tain over all the world in this department of
art, was attributed to the early formation of
agricultural societies.
-The efforts of Sir .lohn Sinclair to promote'
British agriculture, were referred to, and ex
tracts of a letter from Washington to that in-,

on the art of agriculture, which he said was held
in high regard by the ancients. The address
