according to the reports given in the Ca l tholic

.:That we declare an act lately passed ly the

their first act has been to set It at open defaince,

prrsecution. They Want very much to be
persecuted, coos to gain sympathy with. the lib

British persecution is eo mild and gentle an or
deal, thit it is not hard to hake ; but if - thess
bishops wereli catch a little of the sort that
now riots at °toe and Naples, they would not
be no ready fok martyrdom.: •
The "higher law" is in tall operation among
the Irish Catholics ; and it must be confessed
that they have put the British government into
an awkaiard position. This opposition to the
law is manifested in the most ostentatious use
of tho very titles which the law forbids., Take,
far instance, the title We have quoted in the first
paragraph, as an appendage to the very unpre
tending name of Paul Cullen. We plain re
publicans laugh at such nonsense: but over
there, among antagonistic , iderarchiet, these
things are deemed •to be vastly Important.—
Suppose the I Pppe should take it into his bead
to dub John Hughes, or somebody else, with the
title of Archbishop of New York, and Primate
of all Borth America ; we would core nothing
abuiit it; but not so iu treat Britain and Ire
land; and, to be serious, we bellerq that this
foolish queation is likely to embroilirelanAn
' , Ater feuds, if not bloodshed.
Tire' Protestants, on ohs other hand, are get
ting their blood up, and are holding meetings in
opposition. Both parties seem to be equally des
titnte of Christian feeling or principle. Both
telt and shout and yell, as embittered partizans
are innt to flu, and the reports of both,es giv
en by themselves, are equally disgraceful to the
Christitn name. Altera appears to' be this dif
ference—while in the Catholic , mortician; the
c . leegy take the laud, in that of the Protestant
party they,do not. Unhappy Ireland; Crushed

...ern, on Tuesday last,
Of very considerable interest td the citizens of
Pittahurgh, arid the country, along the line of ..
Railroad from your city to the lake. At the
north endof this beautiful village, where the Bea ••
ver river bands conch more to the eastward so as
to cress the line of the Railroad allnedt at right'
angles, a viaduct issrequired get to the West
side of that river.
This viaduct is constructed on two abut.
meats and four piers of admirable stone ma
sonry, and consists of fi ve arches of heavy tim
ber frame work, of 132 feet span each, and re
luiring in its construction nearly six hundred
thoueand feet of Umber—total length 710 feet.
It has been for some time completed across the
river, except the introduction of arch timbers
beneath, which are required to be of each heavy
timber as' cantlV be obtairied until we have an
other rise of the Allegheny. The frame work
.however Is of a most substantial character, ad
mirably secured together by bolts and bars of
Iron, and strengthened by braces, so as to pre
sent to the eye • the appearance , of wonderful
strength, and temporarily strengthened from lee
loW by scaffolding. •
The laying down of the rails his lately been
completed from the water station and turn to
ble in this village across the viadtict, though at
some diaidrantago on account of the want of
the conveyance of rails by locomotive power.
On Tuesday, however, thelmomotive Salem
with six gravel cars, conveying about fifty tons
of rails passed over safely, and the viaduct ex
hibited not the slightest appearance of weak
ness. The able and indefatigable . engineer and
builder,. Mr. John Gray, deems very confident
that it will beat any weight which tray be tallied
upon it. Since that time the Cantonlocomotive has
commenced running regularly across the viaduct
conveying railroad iron for the eidension of the
road towards Alliance, while from Alliance the
road is being rapidly extended this way, with
rails brought by the way of Quebec and Cleve
land. •
While I am writing, kmay as well state' that
Mr. Merrick has just Isommeneed digging the
cellar of a considerable addition to the already
large and commodious Merrick House.
This addition is to be forty•seven. feet long.
thirty feet wide, end to contain fuer stories and
a basement. The first story will he an enlarge-
DMA of the dining room, the other three stories
will be divided into chambers. When this huild
ing Is completed, the Hole will be one

Immense quantities-of itha are arriving daily

with those of the old world, unless thsy can pro

sad day for the country
. when oar mechanics
cannot earn sufficient to prOcure the common

of the Loclfpoco arty.
• Laborers are accumulating at k ibe rate of half
a million a year. Already we 'begin to one the
consequences of this rapid accession. Mehl
tudes -are Idle much - of their time from absolute
Inability to procure work. This evil Is constant
ly augmenting. Where will it and?
A wise and humane government will take care
, ,
that no portion of its people softer wrong, But
Is it not a wrong-to deprive the people of labor':
!'here are, stthiamoment, ten thoosand strong
men, brought( up as iron-workere, out of employ
ment, because Congrese refaces to give them that
protection neeessary to enable them to compete
with their competition in Europe. And wbo•is
benefitted by their sufferings?' Not the people
generally; fur it is demonstrable that the people
are most henefitted by that policy which creates
an active demand for labor. Rail Road Compa
nies may save a few thousands by importing
their iron: but it can be shown, that even they
would be benefitted by a policy whicll: - althoagh
It might, at first compel them to pay a w dol
larsl more per t o for their iron, would , the
end, secure them a troth° which would yield c
a revenue tend d greater than their extra o \t

The business interests of the country are! mosll

does the most to secure work !for the People,
does the most'to.promoto their Welfare and their
