PITTSBURGH GAZETTE. 'The Divining Rod, or Bletoiritm. Webster defines the divining rod to be "a rod, commonly of hazel, with forked branches, used by those Who pretend to discover water or metals under ground." Of StetortiAin, whosechief characteristic is the 'use of this rod, he does not speak quite so ambiguously; he says nothing of pre tence, but designates it as "the faculty of perceiving and ,indicating aubterraneous springs and currents by sensation ; so called from one Bleton, of France, who itas supposed to possess this facility." . If the great lexicographer, bad added to springs and currents; ores and native metals, as discoverable .by; sensation, his description would. have been more full and correct. For, as the whole mystery of the so called divining red iresolves itself into a question of electricityland as water and ore are the most poi'veifdl conductors of this subtle fluid that, areJOUnd under ground, it fol lows that'ore will affect sensation, or rather attract *the rod, as well as water; and when this is the case, the question arises, whether it is the-ono or the other that produces the effect! The practiced geologist is best qualified to solve 'this question. Some years ago there lived in the neigh borhood of liagerseovra,'Slaryland, a man who was in the habit of informing the farmers who intended to sink a well, where' they should dig with a certainty of finding - water. He used the rod, or hazel fork, and his experiments almost invariably ,proved satisfactory. Neither he nor those who employed him understood the rationale Of the- matter, arid hence they supposed that he possessed a superhuman faculty; and a great deal of other superstition was connected with it, both in his own mind and in that of others. He was regarded by some as a inosi 4 extraordinary person, 1 and treated by them with a degree of rev erence bordering on idolatry. This subject is now: better understood. I In our country it • has indeed not yet re- 1 ceived much attention; but in France it has been investigated,. ud 'is now honored there with a place among the , sciences. It I bits been ascertained that almost everywhere individuals, females as well as males, may be found in whtse hands the rod will ope- •rate, and that there i, nothing in the Ole nomena, manifested but what may be-ex plained in accordance With the establii, lied laws of nature. The charge of weakness, and superstition, and the imputation of 1 delusion and. humbuggery, must therefore be given up, and the subject he treated as other branches of science are. But what, are the . principles of Bletonism, or how are a the phenomena of the so.terined divirdur rod to be accounted for 1. Let it be borne in mind, that as the human body abounds with veins, arteries and other blood-vessels, both small and great, vattose office it is to distribute the vital fluid throughout the system, and con ' vey it back to theheart, the fountain-head; ,so the earth is a huge body containing nu merous strata of ore .and veins of water By-means of -the latter the subtetraneau water is conveyed through hills and valleys; frequently finds its way to the surface, and having answered its destined purpose, it returns again to 'the' briny ocean ; is puri— fiedi again taken up by evaporation, de, • mends it:Crain' and snow, and agnin passes through the same useful proces;3. These . under-earth streamlets and tied:, of ore are the best - conductors of adeetrieity to be foUnd - beneath the earth's, surface. 2. It mast be remembered that the won- c7rful fluid called electricity is distributed throe¢hot the whole earth; but that some J bodies gen rate or imbibe more than others. , Those tha 'contain more than their natural .. portion are said to be positice4', and those which co,irt less to he negatfre/y,charged. Or, in . other words,! in the one lease the , electricity is termed posit ire, and in the' other aegative. •,, , i, 3. One ofltic established laws IS electri- , city; is found in the fact, that two bodi , - , , both positively or both negatively 'charged, invariably repel each other; whilm if the, one . be positivelyiand the other negatively charged, they nnifortnly.attruet ea it other. This principle is so univernd,'th t, so far _ as is known, there is no exception to it - 4. It, has already been remarked that the . 1 best subterranean conductors are beds - of ; ore,, or 'native metals, and veins" of water It is their nature to extract the latent fluid from surrounding objects, and absord itl themselves; hence, where these exist, there . ] will he the most electricity ; In general, , the human body is also a good conductor; I but therelre some exceptions. Some men ; ,usually generate or 4mbibe almost as much positive as negative fluid, and maintainflag an equilibrium in their system, the divining' rod will not .be visibly affected lin,., their' hands. Others produce positive ell.etrieity; I they are surcharged, or hare tMre than their natural share. It is said that some, • are occasionally so highly charged, that, like the far on a cat's back in cold weather,. tlfey.emit electrical sparks when touched or manipulated. We confess that this .phe nomenon has not yet fallen under oar notice. , . - „ 5. Let au individual highly negatively charged, i. e. an individual containing a very small amount of electricity, (only such an one is qualified to make the 1111)..t. • successful experiment,) take the rod into ' his hands, and pass over a eater, beneath Which there is a stream of water or a ,tra tum of ore, and what, according to one of the unchanging lasia of nature, will be -mug be the effect on the rod, and ?orNe quently on the sensation of him who holds I it ? Remember, the persoq,' making the' experiment is ighly negatively charged; !"--- • the water -beneath his feet has absorbed the electricity of adjacent bodies in the earth; the elastic twig in his hands forms l a part of the connection between the posi !tire and, negative poles; and two bodies, the one positively and the other negatively Ctiarged, by an immutable law of nature, or rather of the 'God of nature, alicays attract each other;—what, tinder' such dram:- stances, mast be the effect on the twig, and on the perception' of the experimenter? -Unquestionably the twig will be attracted • .downward or toward the water, and the - experimenter-will perceive it as well by the' tense .of feeling 'as of vision. -I. Suppose the', experimenter is highly • . positively charged; like the water below', • his system has produced or imbibed a very, large portion of the latent fluid;—what f then? Why, by the law already referred to, there will he a manifest repulsion. The . twig, instead of bending downward toward the water, will bend backward toward him , self,,and the phenomenon will be equally perceptible. Thus it appears that persons ..either greatly surcharged, or greatly defi cient-, are nearly alike competent to make the experimen(; while with those who are only moderately supplied, or in whose ; system something like an equilibriUm ex -hits, perecivable , pflect will take place. Thg whole theory, if a delusion, eon do ' no harm; for it may be_.easily tested, and • if -after a full and fair investigation it is found to be a "humbug," it will fall to the ... ground of itself. But ridicule, sneers and . contempt, in such a case as this, amount to nothing; they are often the only. weapons of ignorance and self-conceit. A complete and impartial trial, based on an adequate • number of experiments, - can alone finally settle the question. . A. gentleman in the .forth "has been examining the subject for many -years, and has tried. a great variety of experiment:, • which show that all the.phenomeea of the rod are governed by the lawn of electricity. . He has tested - the rod by theelectrical ma 'When;the rod is brought nesythe . positive pole, it is, attracted towards it. But bring it towards the negative pole and ' 'it is repelled." "Place " says be, "a Silk handkerchief under the rod, SO as to break the.conneetion. between it and the conduc tor, and there ill' no electrical attraction made ups. the rod. Remove the hand--I kerchief, a.d the rod instantly drawn dotvn.. Th• numerous experiments which' the writer .a 3 made chew that all the phe nomena of the rod may- be explained by ; electrical e citation." wA re o t extract from a . Prench paper gives the description eta man of high mo ral and intellectual standing, who is _sensitive td electrical excitation, that he ; can tell without a_rod or, anything in hi. hands: where the veins of wairr. are. by the sensation produced by electricity nn his throat, as he passes over any earsfnctor in the earth. This sere.ati..o i• des ib,:d as being similar to that prickling fjeliue whick is experienced from th , . galiAnto battery. "The Rev. Mr. Avery, of Holden, some years since, made some seientific investiga tions, and arrived at the conclitsion that tiir , effects on the rod vver,,e produced by ..lee tricity. The subject is row being thorough ly investigated. In almost every place there are those iu whose hand.; the rod will operate.
