Horace Greely, who is now mating the tour of
the continent of _Europe, writes an‘ interesting

We copy portions of his letter.

"This Kingdom is to day, after France, the
chief point of interest in continental Europe for
lovers of Human_ Liberty. Three years ago,
under the impulse of the general uprising of the
nations, its rulers entered upon a course of pol

rigorous prosecution of reforms in every depart

has already been established, and the long crush
ed and mew:tied Vaudois or Waldenses rejoice
in the brighter day now opening before them.—
Their simple worship is not only authorised and
piotected in their narrow, secluded Alpine val

Turin, the metropolis; where they are now en
deavoring to erect a temple which shall fitly set I

pecuniary aid, which I trust will be granted ex

shall be open, when not otherwise required, to
any Protestant clergyman who produces ample
testimonials of his good standing with his own
denomination at home. Such a church in Turin
would be of incalculable eervlce to the cause of
human emancipation from the ehackles of force, '
proscription and.tradition throughout Italy and '
the Eastern World. '

Yet there is an earnest outspoken democratic

remedied by the construction of a millroad from
Turin, now completed for 70 miles, having but
30 miles yet to be constructed, but so extremely
difficult, owing to de ruggaineas of the country,
that It will, require three millions of dollars to
make those thirty miles. Still he says it will be

Enrrom—The pains which have ben ta:
ken to proems the Ingestion, in so many papers
of. the answers of °Pitteholgio" to the <Pieria
of'oCirnmbendibus," show that some one must
think them exceedingly satisfactory and anselsii
else. Yet with everywish in the world to And
iciebehicies between this end Stenbinsillle by the
route 'proposed, 2 cannot, in this 'Mae realise the,
aptitude Which people are said to have of seeing
what they wish. 'cannot find the solutions to
the objecting urged which some editors profess
to see in them._One thing, however, is very .
Plain,, and that is the shocking had insper,
generally,'of the sidrocates of the hill • rend.
That is umelly . a siga of conscious weakness.
If the argument is entirely with them—and the
fact thit the road-
will be:sonde, go well estate. .
lobed as they prof use-they Welt irately afford
to laugh at objections rather than meet them
with, ugly epithets, and absurd charges. It is
to be presumed that there are no ...enemies of
Pittsburgh" residing here, but It may well hsppen
that gentlementhay differ u to the best means
. 0i promoting her interests And we may de
pend upon it that while those interests cannot
softer from calm dismission, they may. grievous'
ly, from'rash andunoomadered action. Ascheme
that - cannot endure investigation, had better
be abandoned. It le no light thing to expend a
considnible portion of our, not too abundant
;capital :in a wrong direction. A. roadthat is not
profitable to its stockholders can scarcely he so
to the community. : :'do not mean to say that
the proposed Btvabenrilte rosdnill not be so.—
What I sat down to complain of, was' the very
unsatisfactory nature of the answers which are
trumpeted as so overwhelmingly concludes. Take
an instance: 7
To the question "Wow much will tie bridge
cost ?"- the answer is "It will coat so much as
will be required to construct it. We do not
know, th e exact spirit which dictated such an
answereue this, and therefore apply no epithet,
lest we might not use precisely the -right one,'
and more especially as say one that we ootuo -
with any regard to fitness, might not be con
sidered very fiatterbrg. We may be permitted;
however; to say that itieemseo much in the spir
it of the "challenge and defiance," which is. all
that the editor of the downed says he has to of
fer, that among the "well answered" questions
we must suppose thatlie considers this one no
particularly "well answered." To us, however
it appears very much akin to what is generally
known as 'a woman's reason. Other of the que
ries are replied to in -very much in the same
way. For example, to that very important gnu
tion " How is the railroad to MU the Ohio at
Bterthenville?" the answer deemed all sufficient is
that it will cross by the same means that the
Hempfield and other nil roads win cross. . But
as to how they are to cross we are not told.—
Now the that Is that the road must have two
bridges our the Ohio, or two ferries. That is
position which cannot, we think,' be crank
though our friend •littaburgh• thews a good
deal of skill in that way. If by bridges, so high
and of such span, as not to abstract the naviga
tion, the question of their cost In a iced of for
ty miles becomes an exceedingly important one.
If by ferries, the element of Urns must be consid
ered. Whether the time so isonsained in crossing
would not be equivalent to the increased dis
tance of the river souk is a Veal= that ad
mita of argument, awl will be discussed, even
at the riot of being. put down as "enemies of
Pittsburgh interests."
The author of the answers to the queries es.'
timates that the proposed road, with a ferry at
each end, with the Hayfield railreati eels one
side, and the rieezu Moocher. will pay as good
dividends as any other railroad coenecting with
Pittsburgh. , We shall not now dispute this.—
But how would it be if the river ' road-Should
also be made? as, from present apPesmances, it
is very likely to be, and we believe certainly
will be. Would not that be a competition that
would be likely to render the hill road MY
bad atock ' • ,-
Not to trespass farther upon youcedumas,
Editor, I nor not wedded to any route but
the one that after a.fair, full and dispassionate
discussion shall be deemed to be the best route.
I am no advocate for urging these things 'with
a rash.' Excitement and resentment are bad
counsellors If the spare capital of Pittsburgh
is diverted into a wrong ehannel,;:the evil is
much greater than world at first bhish seem ap
parent,.But that is a branch of the subject
that I crnnot now discus. Vesting the tine
friends of the road will meet the. question, not
with challenge, defiance, and, I may aid, vili
fication, but with facts, Information and argu
ment. I remain, G.

when Mr. Dunlop offered a .similar provision
with the remark "that Judges might resign and
get recommissioned before the expiration of
their term, not that he meant to say any Judge
of the Supreme Court would do so." Mr. Wood
ward, the advocate and author of the 2d section
of the sth article of , the Constitution,. and a
strjagirig Democrat, laid "he did not contem
plate al course which would be so MAI, discredi
table, and the amendment, (the 2d seetion,) did
not prerlde against such' a continency:" 13
Deb. Pa. Con. But • Bolan,. and Forward,. and
WoodwXrd, were equally at fault Athenians
were fond who did kill their parents, and e
Pennsylvania Judge who did resign in order to
be re-appointed; with this difference, howerer,
that the Athenian parricides claimed no reward
for their berbarity, whereas John Bannister Gib
son sets votes, money, end honors, as a recom
pense for a detestable evasion of the Constitu
tion he'was sworn to rapport and expound.

I have seen to day, the first volume of the
miscellaneous speeches of Mr. Webster, as edit

publication by LIME & Brown, of Csmbridge.
The first two volumes, of five or six hundred
pages each, are printed, and are to be followed
by three volumes of Mr. Webater's speeches to

diplomatic- oonermandenee and other matter.—
All these , volumes are accompanied brnotes,
some by Mr. Webster and some by Mr. Everett;
and they will make • work ~ allke creditable to
the polities, the literature, and the history of the
government, during the thirty five or. forty years
in which Mr. Webster has been in public life.—
These seven volumes will be published at the
same time and probably at about the close of the
