The platform of the Pennsylvania Whip is ,
again put forth - in the eight of all men. The

The resoluthins of the Convention assert the
doctrine of Protection to American labor, with
that emphasis Pennsylvania ought to use. The
contrast they offer in this respect to the chilly
' chatty dodging declaration of the Opposition,
I daring neither to say Protect:loaner Free Trade,
I cannot be too thoroughly pondered by the voters
of the State, and Ire doubt not will be folly urg
ed home upon them In the canvass. The welfare
of Pennsylvania is thoroughly identifiedwith the
triumph of Whig policy; her industry that pros-
tram and coffering from arranti-American Tariff;
and it is more than appropriate, it is indispensa-.
ble on occasion of such an election as this, to
I renew in the strongest terms the proclamation of
fidelity to that cardinal Whig doctrine. There
are those who affect to sneer at Protection es an
obsolete sad useless Idea, but such aro not the
Whip of Pennsylvania, such are' not her arti
sans, her miners, or her farmers. -
Not less striling is the contrist•in the position
of the two parties on the slavery . and *dare
catching question. The opposition reek to raise
this into the very front rank, and to Carry them
ielvea into office upon it as a curt of grand anti-
SeCellBloO anti-dissolution party. They (mein to
forget th at they are not in Mississippi or South
Carolina, where disunion has been heard of with
some seriousness, bat in Pennsylvania, where it
has only been heard of to be ridiculous. And
while proclaiming their tender iognnl for the re
served rights of the States, and insisting that
the people of, one State ought not to iniefere in
the domestic institutions of another, they pour
out their wrath upon. the law of Pennsyhanis
by 'which the jails of the Commonwealth sre sa
cred from use in slave-catching. This law, they
tell us, is calculated to endanger the Union'and
infringe upon the great and eternal Compro.

The Whip haven such protestations to make_
Their ground has already been taken on these
questions, and is well known.. They obey the
laws of the country; they admit that the Fogi
tire Law, being one of them, should be deers
. ed and respected; but they regard it es not a
proper law, and as a - fit subject for amendment
when the proper time shall arrive. They now
reiterate what they have before 'affirmed on this
topic, at "the same time they put forth, with all
the weight they can give it, the great national
doctrine of Protection, with an exultant endorse
ment and approval of the course-of the success
ful statesman who again bears their banner in
this contest. In each hands and under such' au
spices, the light of victory already gleams upon
its folds.

those whose houses had been destroyed, both as
to the , position and extent of their property, pro
raised not only interminable occupation-to the
courts of- law, .but made the, far more serious
evil of delaying the rebuilding of the city, until
these disputes were settled, inevitable. Impelled
by the necessity of coming to - a more speedy set
tlement of their respective claims than could be
hoped for from legal process, it was 'determinial
that the claims and interest of all persons eon"
caned should be referred to the judgment end
decision of two of the - most experienced land
surveyors of that day—men who had en
