It has been a little surprising to me that so great an interest should be taken in the United States in the Great Exhibition called the World's Fair, in London. I cannot exactly perceive what we hare to do with it. That the statesmen and merchants of Great Britain should combine their intelligence, authority, and energy to pro duce such a show is not wonderful, because the advantages to their country of making such a . thing generally attractive to their own country men, and the business men and cariosity seekers of other nations, arelyth important and obvious. The idea was a happy and bold one, and is at tributed to Prince Albert. If it really belonged to him affords another indication that he ie something far above the ordinary nrid insignifi cant charactere alio figure in historical annals as princes ionsevt. -Prince Albert appears to be a man of rat= and accomplishments. The great arlibitieri.is a wonderful and tolerably macess ful undertaking—one in which Englishmen may naturally and properly enough take pride. It is a gigantic, practical advertisement of England's gcods, wares, and merchandise, by sample, and enormous as its aggregate cost will have been, it will prove in the end a much cheaper mode than advertising by the line in the Times, the Journal Ora Debata: the Courier and Enquirer, or any other of the printed media through which British tradesmen'. make themselves and their wares known to , the world. As we are the greatest and best customer they have; the managers of the affair took patois to interest nil in it, tad commenced by assigning to no a space in the enclosure mach larger than we were Likely to fill. It ham not been filled, and the Bridsh press is now . amusing itself with sneering At the meagreness of our display, and many Aerican newspapers are taking to themselves great shame and humiliation of spirit by reason of the same. Though .my patriotic feelings are pretty lively, I do . nofihsre is their sentiments of self abase ment. •To my mind, our contributions to the fair are greater in amount and variety than could *reasonably have been expected. From SL Louis to New York, by the route of travel, is two thous and milts, and from the latter point to Liverpool is three thousand more. All - our contributions, therefore, have to go three thousand miles, and many of them five thousand. How absurd to aspect that Pittsburgh, Frankfort, and St. Louis should attempt to compete with Paris, Hamburg, Lyons, and Vienna! Our manufacturers and people amorally did not feel called upon very loudly to pay tribute to the pomp and enterprise, not altogether dis interested, of Great Britain. If the cargo of the • Bt..l.,:swre nee did not 511 the allotted space, our Minister and the Commiselorters should at once have arranged for its diminution. What we have dome I cOnsidermuch more for the advantage of British friends than our own, and they ought to be grateful accordingly. In this view the disparaging tone in which the London Times and some other prints speak of thi comer presided over by ~ the great spread. eagle, has . something in it of the mean and un generous. We have not done the best we could, but they should thank us that we have done any thing., We ~ . c an derive little or no advantage from advertising in Hyde Park, because the articles . we export or ever seek to sell in Europe commend themselves without the aid of spectacles of that sort American Cotton, Indira Corn, Tobacco, Wiest, Flour, Rice, Bacon and Hams, have imp:tired a notoriety in the world's markets which; all the glories of the glass hove cannot increroc.. We can appreciate the uneasy- feeling which the somewhat ostentatious bearing of this bird must excite in the breast bf the critic of the Times; but tht; very recollections for which he hates him me kes us lore him. Then our agricultural implgto cote and machines \ are large and clumsy, and "a mild be rejected as weiildess by the Bri tish farmer." The immediate results of the exhibition, have so far been really brilliant and gratifying: The very idea of a spectacle which can colteot twenty or thirty thousand spectators in a day, and sic ken or eighteen thousand dollars in admission charges, is striking and impressive. Itis almost equal to one of Jenny Ltnd's Castle Garden cod. certs ' That wonderful creation, the Crystal Palace, itself, the condescension of the Queen, the throng of nobility, 'and the prestige of Royal and Governmental authority, have had far more to do with tide success than the Merits of the exhibition, considered with reference only to the beauty, rarity, or novelty of the articles display ed in it. But the collateral advantages have not been so signet There is no very inconvenient crowd in London, and if the glass palace •kirawa like a blister," It draws people 'away from every other place of amusement. The theatres, the museums, and eireues are deserted; and do not begin to pay expenses. There is:no press of guests at the hotels, and nothing to justify fears of a famine, from a superabundance of foreign menthe.. Indeed, according to many accounts, the proprietors of gardens, watering places about. Even the shop keepers' declare that it.don'twork well But I have written too much. It is a good vhing for- the trade and industry of Great 'Britain, and that is . all. The best letters written to this country about it, are Mr. Greelfal Efforts are making to bring about a 'settlement of the Methodist Church case, in advance of the decision of the Court. Justice Nelson advised ho partiei to do so, giving colour by We re-. marks, to the inference that ho would decide - id foyer of the Church South. His intimation ie much to be regretted. ThO law of the case is clearly against the seceders, almost by the ad mission of their own lawyers, and Justice lief eon ought to be held to the respousibility of thb lodgment he so eridently desires to give. No lawyer here beligires he could =stain it by a rek. pectable opinion. I hope no compromise will be listened to. Whatever the Circuit Judge, Nelson, may wish to do, be can only effect a division of the Court, for the District Judge will decide ac cording to the law, and the case will go up to the Supreme bench. In either event, the result as between the parties will be the same, for the Church North which holds the funds, intends to pay over to the Southern conferences the pro portion contributed by their part of the country, as near as it can be ascertained, whether they gain or or lose the emit Ae to the Idea of re uniting the fragments of the church, that is practicable. Their affairs can never be condneted so well together as I separately, while the present unfortunate political discussions exist. I shall look upon the division of every denomination into which this terrible and lamentable contra versy uponslavery, shall force its way into north ern add southern organizations, as the very best thing for the paste of the country, and the ad vancement of true religion, which could pos sibly happen. The annoal wrangle in Congress is a., much us the country can well bear upcit that topic. i1.741(15, Ns,' Youz, June 7. 1&1 A few more failures of people engaged in cot ton speculations have been announced, but cred it remains unimpaired, among merehants gepe rally. cotton speculators should keep up so long is,more remarkable than their failure I when it is remembered that the depreciation in prices amounts to twelve dollars per bale, and thus a good quantity of that which has been shipped to France cannot be closed eteept at a lcsa of sixteen dollars per bale. The Erie Road Las been earning in Jane no less a sum than eight thou sand dollars per day, often sending off a train of two hundred or two hundred and twenty people, through to 'Dunkirk. Even the securities of this road, enormous as they are, fall twenty millions, change hands to a small extent, but are held by able men at the high position their intrinsic val ue prompts them to take. One pair of female trowsers were seen in Broadway yester day, attracting as much notice as the Calf ele phant of Bancum's caravan, "only three feet high," es the bills say.
