Losnos, Tuesday, Idey 6, 1830,
have seen very little, yelof England, and do,
not choose to deal in generolties, with regard.to
it until my ignorance has lett something of Its
density. Liverpool imPiessed me ungivonthly,
but I scarcely saw it. The working class seem
ed exceedingly ul dressed, stolid, abject and hope
less. Extortion and beggary seemed very prev
alent. I must look over that city again if . I
,have time.
We rune up to London by the 'Trent Valley
through Crewe,- Rugby, . Tanworth,
toe., avoiditig all the great towns and .traversing
(Ism told) one of theiinest Agricultural districts
of En,flauil. The distance is two hundred miles.
The Railroads traversed in no place tress a
road or street on - is own level, but see Invariably
tarried under or over them, no matter at , what
Crost.; the face-of the country is generally level;
bills were vialble at intervals, but nothing fairly
entitled to the designation of mountain. I was
assured that very little of the lewd I taw could
be bought for $3OO. while mush of it is held at
csoo or more per sere. Of course it is good
land, well cultivated, and very productive.-- ,
Vegetation was probably more advanced here
than in Westchester Co. I+. Y., or Monis Co. No
J. though not in every respect. , estimated
'lwo-thirds, of the land I saw nu in Gritti,
one-sixth in Wheat, and the residue devoted to
Gardens, Trees, Oats or Barley, Re. There were
few ar no forests, properly es called, but mazy
copses, fringes , and clumps of wood sad throb
-Eery, which agreeably diversify the prospect as
ne are whirled rapidly along: Still, nearly all
the wooded grounds I taw looked meagre sad
scanty, as though trees. great less luxuriently
here than with us, or (more probably) the best
are cut out and sold as testae they anise at mis.
- Mends at home! I charge you to grease,
.preserve aid cherish 'some portion of yourprim
nire forests; for when these are cutaway'ap
prehend 'they will not easily be - replaced.
amend growth, of trees is better than none, but
it cannot civil the unconscious magnificence and
'stately grace of the Red Man's- lost Muting
Founds, at least for many generations. Ten ,
i .veraing the comparatively treeless region carried
by thoughts - back to the glorious magnificence
and beauty of the etilltmacathed forests of West
ern Hew York, Ohio, and a good part of Midi
, Pin, which I had long ago rejoiced in, but - which'
I never before prized so highly. Some portions
of there' fast falling monuments of other days
ought to be ensued by public forecast from the
pioneer's, the woodman's merelles axe, and pee
-1 served for the admiration and enjoymezd of fa
tale ages. Rochester, Baffalo,Erie, Cleveland,
Toledo, Detroit, to., ehanld each parchriae for
preservation a tract of one to five hundred acres
of the best forest land still accessible (say with
in ten lilies of their respective centres,) and
gradually convert it into wanes, driver, arbors,
fOr the recreation and *dace of their cal
tens through all nieceeding time. Should -n
portion be needed for cemetery or other utilita
rian purposes, it may be yet of when , wanted;
and ultimately a railroad will afforithe poor
the sienna of geirig thither and returning
at a small expense. if Something of this
sortie to be done, it cannot be done too soon; for
the for-eta are annually disappearing and the
pf price - wood near out , sides and holiness towns
rapidly rising.
I meant to base remarked ern this, the scarci
rty Fruit throughout this region. Ithitik there
are fewer trait trees in bight on the two hundred
'miles of railway between Liverpool and -Londtm,
than on the feisty miles of Hallam Raifroad di
rectly north of 'White Plains. I presunus from
various Indications that the-apple and peach do
not thrive here; and 4 judge that the English
make less account pf fruit than we de; though
we use it too sparingly and fitfully. If their 41.-
mate is unfavorable to its abundant and perfect
procactioit, they have-more excuse than we for
their 'negieet of one of the choicest of Ileasesiir
. The approach to London from the West by the
Trent Valley Railroad is unlike anything else in
'my experie' nee. Usaally,.your proximity to a
great city,is indicated byes succession of, 'villages
' and hamlets which may- be designated as more
ar lesesit'abby miniatures of the metropolis thee
surround.•; The City may be cadent. withipidsi
ees, but Its satellites are rue no be nuadeup in
good part , pf rookeries and hovels. But we were
still pasting through a highly cultivated and not
overreopled rural district, - when lel there gleam
ed oti our sight an array of stately,. graceful
mansions, the- seeming abodes of An., Taste and
Abundarterf/ we doehted that this could be Un
don ; in the course of a few moments some two
or three miles of it rose upon the visits, undue
Could doubt no longer. Soon oar road, which
had avoided the costly contact as lure as possi
ble, took iaieheer to the right, and chargedbold
upon this grand array of masonry, and in en
mstanterfrwers passing under some block? of
stately edifices - and between otherahlte them.—
A mile or .rwo of this brought us to the !Endes
, square flietion," where oar Railroad terminates.
and we were in Landes. counte„ -this isnot
'the City," specially*, called, Grandest London,
but a modern end .addition, distin—
guished a Camden-town.- .We. were about three
miles from the Bank,- Poet Office, St. Pura
Church, en, attested in the heart of. the city
proper, though nearer the East end of it.' . , -
I shall not attempt to speak directly orlon
don. The subject is too vast, anti toy knowledge
of it too raw and scanty. I dues rather lo
give some account of an excursion I have made
to the royal palace of Hampton Court, situated
fifteen miles West of the City, where the Thames,
which runs through the grounds adjacent, has
shrunk to the she of the Mohawk,: at Scheme- -
lady, and I think even lees A wry null shwa
boat sometimes reins up as high as this point,
brit not regularly, and for all practical purposes
the naarigation terminates at Richmond, fair er
five miles below. • - _
Leaving the city by Temple Bar, you pass
through, the Strand, Charing Croon, the Hay
market, Pall Mall and part of Regent-stiinto
Piccadilly, where you take - an omnibus at ‘The
White Horse Cellar,' (I glee these names be
cause they will be familiarto mane, If not most
American reader%) and proceed down Pieta--
dilly, passing St James's Park on the left, Hyde
Park and Kensington Gardens on the right, and
so by Kensington Road to a fine suspension
bridge over the Themes ; you cross, and have
passed westerly out of 'London. You traverse
acme two miles of eery rich - gardens, meadows,
and thence through the village of Barnes.
*imposed-mainly of some two or three hundred
of the oldest, shabbiest, tumble-downapologies
for human habitations that I ever saw so close
together. 'Thence you proceed through a rich: -
thoroughly-oultinted garden district, containing
several tine country seats, to Richnond, &smart,
„showy: village ten miles above London, and it
p.spular resort for holiday pleasure-seekers from
the' greit city, whether by steamboat, - railway,
amoebas or private, conveyance. Here is a fleet
of r owboats kept ibr hire, while 'the Star and
Qart Inn has a Wide teputation for dinners,
and hie scene from its second-story bow window
it pronounced one of - the finest in the kingdom.
It certainly does not compare with that from the
Catskill. Mountain Horse and many others in
our State,. - tan. is a good thing in another way—
s lovely blending of wood, water and sky, with
'gardens, eilfiees end other pleasing evidences of
mane handiwork. Pope's residence: at Twick
enham, and - Walpole's Strawberry Hill are near
Richmond. '
•
Proceeding, no drove through a portion of
Bushy Park, the royal residence. of the late
Queen Dowager Adelaide, widow of William the
IV., who hero managed. hoeing house, grounds,
Re., thrown in, taaupport life on an allowance
or slloco, ooo v. year. The . Park in a noble one,
about half can red with ancient, stately
- trees,
among which large' herds of tame, portly deer
are seen girietl't feeding. , A mile or two further
brought us to tie grounds and palace of Hamp
