iporrespondriar, of the Pally Pittsburgh Ouset/st]
The reception of President Fillmore, Mi. Web
ster and other. members of the Cahinet in this
city yesterday this et grand, oration. -The po
pular enthusiasm was ntally fine, for itwas eri.
dently genuine and spontaneous: ..That tine
foam or Patriotic rage', which Pitt admired so
much In his friend and :follower George Reese,
was here manifested on a large scale. . hemmed
to animate the population or a whole city, You
will tree in the papers exact - reports of the ad
dresses to the president, Mr. Webster, and Mr.
Crittenden made to them. They were pll brief
and all excellent. A prominent trait' of. the
President's character is his strong sense: but no
man exceeds him in quick perceptiontif the pro
prietiei of an occasion like this. ~ You You will no
tice that he touches upon the eirmunetances of
the celebration with much skill and effect Mr.
Critetrulecea reply to the words of welcome ad
dressed to him by Oen. Sandford, who command
ed the military,. were Pee 4 1 4 14 eiNhetit.staA
propriate. What could be more noble and stri
king than thellinstration - chosen by him to mark
the expected progress of the next half 'century
Let him, said the Attorney General, who has al
ready filled . the . measure of his maturity, and
learned his country's history up to this period,
be permitted, instead of descending into the
the grave, to ascend some mighty 'column, - and
thence observing the world, though' no longer of
it, record the enrols ss thej pass before - him: 7
What wonders would not be revealed to his view
of that min of an extinct - generition! Contrast
ing that future with this present and the. pant,,
with what raptere and. astonishment-Would his
mind be filled as - each new de/elopement - of Na
-1 tore's laws and human genius burtA upon his
view! But I wrong thelarilliant imagination of
Mr. Crittenden by attempting to clothe, his
' thoughts in other words than his own.
It Is not my good fortune "to be one of the =-
lett fear who will accompany the President over
the Erie R. IL, from this city to 11unkirk. The
passage over this long line of road, under these
circumstances, will be far more replete with in
terest than the arrival and reception here. Take
it all in all, I suppose this work is the greatest
of the kind ever undertaken, not to any accom
plished. It 11.11 four hundred and ninety-seven
miles long. It has hems carried . through s and
over dilllculties such as never-before obstrnetel
the completion of an enteittrise of the same
character. The waling of mountains, the mos- -
ring of deep values, the bridging of wide riv
ers, by which alone the road could be carried
orward in nearly a straight line, as it has been,
constitute feats of engineering of which the age
May be proud. But a work .11aving been pro
nounced ixarible by engineers, is not executed.
. or is it done even when you have the labor to
do it with. The money Must be found, the sin
ews of peaceful enterprise as well as of war.
The Erie Railroad was projected prior to 1829,
but it was in that year that measures were first
taken to giVe the:project anything of the shape
and seeming of reality. The first live or six
years were spent in charter-getting, in survey
ing, locating routes, and in raising money, the
last the most arduous of all. It was, I believe,
only in 1838 that the filet teen . was laid.; at the
eastern termination. For many years rthnfit
fifty miles of track in Orange county, in./Leta:al

of a-marching salute.
Throughout the line of march, the crowd wu
very great, and at one time there could not have
been less than 100,000 between the Park and the
Battery. Every doer, widllow, house tap, and
flight of stairs thit commanded 'a view of -the .

galaxy of youth and beauty around her.-
- Throughout the Greets, on the line of march,-
the air was filled with flags . and banners, bear
ing all sorts of devices, and mottos compliment

people, although great; was not Oppressive, there .
was a respectful admiration In all their actions,
which showed plainly that they. regarded the
Chief Magistrate ea a great, good,-and virtuous

were frequent, and hearty, but not boisterous.
I saw no one either ender the influence of undue
excitement or liquor, and the greatest harmony,
and gocia - feeling:prevailed throughout all. the
masses. Business was generally suspended du

After the review, the President ascended the
balcony of the City Hall, and his appearance was
cordially welcoisred..Afterinaking a few remarks,
he returned to his quatere at the Irving House,

thing was on the' most superb scale of maga

and the dinner feciivities were over at nine,
at which hoar the two Whig General Committees
presented their respects to Mr. Fillmore, and

At midnight When ell the city was wrapped In
quietness, and the roar and bustle of the recep

band appeared under , the balcony of the Presi

Henry Clay .Association," and serenaded W.
Flllmare and family for an hour; during'whicli
time every window on both •sides of the street,
was filled with heads in "night-caps," . and the
street itself, was crowded with thousands of ch
i:ems, who kept the most death like silence, while
the mush, continued.
Mr. Webster held his levee at the Astor House,
where he had rooms hardly less gorgeous than
those of the President.. About the same time
that the serenaders were paying their delicate
compliments to the President, the friends of kir.
Webster were also busy. First one, then two,
then hundreds and millions of brilliant roakete

their brilliant fires: . These were followed by.
other fire works, for abOut on hour,Whena large
piece, on the top of the Astor House wall fired.

when the cloud, of delicate smoke had cleared off,
the motto, '',Efintos TO nester. iirt41.5173.," stood
out in bold relief, in lettrrs . of variegated fires..
At the eight of this, the thousands who had been
