county prison. Those who escaped arrest, awed

BURNING OF THE STEAMER WEBSTER.
FORTY LIVES LOST
VICEMILIW, May 8.
The !Learner Webster. Capt. Sam'l. Reno, took
fire,, yesterday a ft ernoon, May 2d, and was burn
ed to the - waters edge, at the head of Island 86,
110 miles iftoovb Vicksburg. The fire was first
discovered, and the alarm given abOut 3 o'clock
and almost instantly, the boat was enveloped in
flames • The Pilot, Mr. Ruckman who had charge
the e,...teelL ileinedtetely endeavored to run the
boat ashore, in which effort he in part succeeded.

Many 'recklessly rushed into the burning flames,
While others crowded to the aide of the boat,
convulsively to its edge, until driven
away by the flames, and finally threw themselres
into the riser. ft was with great difficulty that
the females were eased, many•of• them being
separated from their husbands and friends:—
Twelve or fifteen of the pr .wngers jumped from
the boat and with difficulty eased- their liveshy
clinging to thew:fags until relieved from iheir
••eril by the yawl, awl skiffs from the shore.
•As soon as the dreadful truth became known
to the inhabitants on the shore, three or tour
beats were quickly rowed to the scene of the
disaster, by which the lives of several persons
were saved who were clinging to the boat and
snags. They were taken on board the aterebeat
fires , 114. e, Capt. G. L. C.c. and every assist
ance rered that could be afforded to the wo
men and children who were saved.
The number of passengers and crew was
about one hundred of whom only about sixty
c_art be found. About forty are supposed to
haittperished. '
