We are still enjoying the moat delightful
weather here, and under the influence of the
warm sun, oar trees and the award in our parka
are rapidly putt i ng on there summer livery.—
The whole appearance of the city, anitetteirons
has been changed by a few days warm sun
shine..
The city was thrown into something of a com
motion yesterday, by the news that the United
States Marshal, had captured a Cato Expedition
under directions from Washington, but the true
story is, that after cruising around the bay all
night, stationing a Revenue cotter on the look
out, and boarding the United States Mail steam
er Ohio, on her way ttpthe bajyesterday morn
ing, "to intercept any communications from .the
rebels in Cuba, to the pirate here,",with a band
of twenty policemen he pounced upon the steam
tow boat "Cleopatra," quietly lying at the foot
of Nutt-Moon street; and forbid her sailing any
where without his permission! The Cleopatra
is an old boat, loaded with coal, andno more able
to go to Cuba than she would be to ny to the
The only evidence against her is that she
lately changed hands, iter destination ia unknown.
The Marshal, however, as the “Stin." the organ
of the expeditionists says, this morning, has been
most egregiously • fooled by some timorous spy
of the Spanish Government. The "patrioni - I
am credibly informed have got a steamer in this
port, and aeren hundred men in the neighbor
hand ready to embark with arms, and munitions
of war. This vessel, however, is not the “Cle
patra." This affair together with the newt
brought by the Ohio of the excitement at Hav
ana has made tome stir here. Strange is it not.
that on entering the port of Havana, a reptirt
should he circulated that the "Ohio"bad brought
the 'invasion," and that entering the port of
New York she should ho boarded by the toiled
States Marshal "to intercept the Patriot com-
munications!"
Mr. Webster who arrived in the city yester
day, has been all morning closeted with the
United States District Attorney, consulting with
him upon some Important despatches from head
quarters, supposed to relate to this Cuba bueiness.
It was intended that Mr. Webster should ODCP
more "define his position" before he left the city,
but in consequence of a mandate from Wash
ington, he leaves for the seat of Government
this afternoon.
The Locofoco General Committee have called

The election of Sumner by the coalitionists of

fell through.
The St. George's Dinner went off with gieat

his extraordinary erections on the occasion.

Messrs. Roberts and Straughan hare rendered
entire satisfaction. We are gratified to see the

Agreeable to notice, a large and respectable
number °Moue citizens convened at the Court

where, upon motion of HosmerCortla,Esq., Br.
J. N. Burr was chosen President, and B . QM*

Mr. Henry B. Curtis being called upon by the
the chair, stated briefly the object of the meet
ing. concluding his remarks by saying, that Mr..
Roberts, the chief engineer of the Ohio and
Pennsylvania Railroad was then present, and
would address the meeting upon the aubject of
Railroads,—whereupon the Chair introduced
Mr. Roberts, who delivered a very able and In

profound attention; after which the 'following
resolutions were offered by Messrs. :Browging

Resolved, That the development made by the
recent surveys, uf the entire practicability of
district lines for a dint Railroad Connection be
tween the town of Mount Vormont and the 0.

maximum grade, on one at least, not axceeding
26 feet to the mile, is a result exceedingly grat

ME ROTATION OF ME EARTH 11CMDERRD
The experiment now being exhibited in Paris,
by which the diurnal rotation of the earth la ren
dered palpable to the senses, is ono - of the most
remarkable of tbo modern verifications of theory.
Although the demotutration by which the rota
tion of the earth has been established be such as
to carry a conviction to the minds of all who are
capable of comprehending it, to which nothing
can be imagined to add either force or clearness,
nevertheless even the natural philosopher. him
self cannot regard the present experiment with
out feelings of profound interest and
eaeefaa
tion: and to the great mass, to whom the compli
cated physical phenomena by which ,the, rota
tion of the earth has been established are in
comprehensible, this experiment. is invaluable.
At the centre of the dome of the Pantheon;ls fine
wire is attached, from which a sphere of metal,
four or five inches in diameter, is suspended so
as to bang near the floor of the building' This -)
, apparatus is put in vibration after the manner of
a pendulum. Under, and concentrical•pith it,
is placed a circular table, some fiventyleet its
I diameter, the circumference of which IS divided
Linto degrees, minutes, Sc., and the divisions
numbered. ,Now, it can be shown by, the Most
elementary principles of mechanics, : thal.,:sup
posing the earth to have the diurnal motion upon its axis which is imputed to it, and which ex
plains the, phenomernt of day and night,..te, the •
plain in which this pendulum vibrates will not
be affected by this diurnal motion, but - vrill
tain strictly the same direction during tvienty
four boon. la this interval, however, the table
over which the pendulum is suspended; 'HMCo&
density change its position in virtue of tliodiut
nal motion, so di to make a complete revolution
round its centre.
Since, then, the table thus revolves; Mad the
pendulum which vibrates over it does notierolse
the consequence is that a line traced upon the
table by a point projecting from the bottoni of
the ball will change its direction relatively, to the
table, from minute to minnte and from bode to
hour, so that it ouch point were a pencil.and
that paper were spread upon the table, thireourse
formed by this pencil during twenty four- boors,
would form a system of lines radiating-from the
centre of the table, and the two linen forteed af
ter the interval of one hour - would always farm
an angle with each other of Iu deg., - being the
twenty fourth part of the eireaniference.r Now
this is rendered actually visible, to the crowds
which daily flock to the Pantheon, to. witnwa
this remarkable experiment. The practised eye
of a cOlitect observer, especially If aided liy•a
proper optical instrument, may actually nee' the
motion which the table has, in common with the
earth, under the pendulum, between two succes
sive vibrations. It is, in fact, apparent that the
ball, or rather the point attached to the bottom
of the ball, does not return precisely to the same
point of the circumference of the table after two
successive vibrations. Thus. is rendered ;risible
the motion which the table has in cottoned with
the earth. It is true that, correctly speaking,
the table does not turn round its own Centre, but
turns round the axis of the earth ; nevertheless,
the effect of the motion relatively to the perdu.
luxe suspended over the centre of the tablet is
precisely the acme as it would be if _the, table
moved once In twenty tour hours round its own
centre, for although the table be turned; com
mon with the earface of the earth, round the
earth's axis. the point of suiperistion of the pen
dulem is turned also, in the-same tinuarciendthe
same axis, being continually maintained:vertical.
above the centre of the table. The_ plane in
which the pendulum vibrated does not, heiverver,
partake of this motion, and, consequently, , has
the appearance of revolving once id twenty. four
home over the table, while in reality, inia-the
table which revolves, once in twenty four, Fours
under it.
