The future growth and wealth of our city, depends entirely upon the proper developemeut ---.of our resources, and the proper exercise of our ' ingenuity and skill. • Bd. What has been done, and what can be done, in the way of manufacturing, must be made -known to the public. before we can expect to re- I alive any return {or labor, skill, and capital. I 4th. This Association can be,made an import ant medium for commtinicatiog the necessary Information. - For these reasons, your Committee are of opin ion that the subject of Pittsburgh Manufactures should receive moro of our time did attention than ha:Sever been devoted to it. In proportio ' to the population and capital, no city or town in the Union excels Pittsburgh in manufactures.— , We Save arrived at this eminence by no rapid strides - 'or vain _pretensions. Slowly yet sure, i natural and easy, has been the advance. So en ay hie it been, that we have gone to the estrum of indifference, and in depending upon nature resources, we have almost permitted our rives to excel us; and we are iu danger of hieing o uuaf high-character for a good article of manufac tur e by thinking that all the world, at least the we em portion of our country, must come to us DU, nails, glass, cotton yarns, Mum engines and. boilers, shards, white lead, copper, and a great variety of other articles not neeesseryi enumerate. But let us take ono Important brute of tasuuthettre, that of cut nails, to show t there are other places competing with us for tbe market.' . A shorttime since, Pittsburgh supplied ' the whole west with flails, and when the demud ceased, and the reason was heard, It was dill- I ' covered that other places had furnished an ar4 - 1 . much handsomer .. h and better than ours, d , ...at the mace price. Had our manufacturer been wide awake, they would have been the first to introduce the improved article; but now they - bare to retain the market by making an article as good and LI cheap, which Ma been done. 4— : As good nails can now be obtained in Pittsburgh u are made at any other place. We beliMie thatmany of our citizens are Ignorant of the , . rlidy sad extent•of our own tonnufictares. If , .not, why do they purchase an article rudetin ' ” *reds of miles from here, ond eta higher ee I . than they could obtain it for, by Walking a rw • steps from their stores and dwellings. W. _is should then, keep ourselves well inforMed .in regard to all the branches of manufacture I in operation in this city. We should also comma nimita this information to this community, and to distant communities. If we were well inform ' ed au well qualified, as we might and ongh •to be, we Worild be able to suggest improveme its, , and take advantage of them es soon as introcuc ' ed. We, therefcrre, ask that the Committer be continued map the close of the present year, and that power be given to report quarterly, on such puticolar branches of manufacture, &limey re Medved the attention of the ComMittee.
