    PITTSBURGH GAZETTE. I
TEE OLD FAMILIAR STRAIN
84, g me that al l famitinr wain
Which touched my heart in boyhood's years
!Before its chords were jarred by pain,
Before its hopes were -dimmed by tears.
!Time has tied fast since first I heard
Its manic from those lips of thine:
But well remembered is each wOrdi
So sing once mere, oh' Mary mint,
' The old faitular strain.
r Thine eyes bare their soft radiance kept,
That won ray heart in life's young spring,
And o'er thy beauty Time haht swept, .
• Gently, with light and charmed wing:
,Unaltered is thy graceful form,
Thy trusting heart is still the same,
Keeping those time affections warm
As when, before I dreamt of fame:
YOU sang to me that sweet old strain.
'Yes, sing! 0.9 in those golden Lurs
j When life, :tad lore, and hope were young,
When fancy strewed our paths with flowers;
• Oh! sing the strain that then you lane.
illowmadest sweet music in that hour,
j •.Ere grief and trials we:had known,
I When first you sang in youthfuLprime,
1 ,- In melody's bewitching tone,.
The old familiar strain.
!Methinks that on that placid brow--
139 lightly touched by furrowing years,
!Since first'we plighted love's fond Yow—
-1 Tbmight's graver shadow now appears,
r•ut if within thy very mirth
%amain!mance of our dead will, corne,
lElliong ties yet bind thee to tho earth—
So ,
breathe once more within ogiikhotae,
Tim old familiar strain.
SPIIIITITALI93I;—Tae RCA INTR.'. TRAGEDY.
Instances of insanity, arising from the effects of
spiritual rappinPs, clairvoyance, Ae., on weak
!minds, continueto increase with alarming fee- .
lquency. Ono of the most prominent lately oe
/curing, is that of the wife of a passenger! on
!boord of the Atlantic on her Into trip, when so
!mach anxiety was felt by the public. The knock
;era informed the wife, that the Atlantic was
!wrecked, null that her husband with all others
on board were lost. The husband returned in
'safety to find his wife a raving maniac, It is
unnecessary to recount the many other instances
'now before us, but we are glad to find, that al
'though authority has not interposed to put a stop
!to the mischief of these spiritual impostors, a
;cutting rebuke has been administered from a yin
!vate quarter which it seems is to be perpetuated
!In marble.
Our readers will recollect the Braintree tinge
ly of suicide, the fall — particulars of which we
Ipubllshednt the' time. The father of the two
'victims holt written a letter to the coroner of
IQuiney, Mass., in which, after detailing the in
finance under which his eon and daughter-in-law
'were held by the writings of A. J. ilaels, and
'Other splinted philosophers, And how it led them
'to their untimely end, he concludes' by request
ing that the following insceiption be cut on their
grace stones: ,
To tho memory of
JOHN It. GRIEVE,
aged 22 yeara,
and
lIANNAII BANKS,
his wife,
aged, 15 years.
-
• Both of Zanesv:lle, Ohio.
I •
Deluded by the writings of A. J. Davis
To this letter of the father, Mrs. Davis
lints returned an answer, deprecating the admi,
'Sion of such an inscription on the tomb stone.
,upholding the writings of her husband, and stat
lug that bad John It. Grieve and Hannah Banks
.read those writings tinderstdrhnuly. they would
.have been "guided away from their weak con:
jtemplations, and never have committed suicide."
We respect the affection of Mrs. Davis, which
leads her thus to defend her husband even in his
eriors.
, When, however, we find. as we do. in A. J.
Davis' works. passages, picturing 'in the most
glowing colors, the joys of death, add the -lung
idficence of the country" to which it leads, when
,ivrefuld Lim stating that he Las had spiritual
communication with persons after dcath, and
that 'all lie states is correct and tree, and when
Fire lace informed by Mr. Grieve that the minds
of his children were continuallyllwellh, on these
'captivating pictures of mixed balderdash and
blasphelny, then we must fain believe, notwith- 1
!standing the remonstrance of Mrs. Davis, that
John R. Grieve and Lis wife rushed, intim weak
(ness of their intellect, even through the gates of
suicide, into the arms of death, simply because
'Davis had made that death a promise of each
'Wes to them, that their longing for the consum
mation could not wait on the regular order of
nature. We consider Davis to have been their
murderer. If, therefore, there in no marble
among the abodes of living men, to wall him in,
and others like Lim, from their baneful, inroads
into the domains of intellectual weakness, 1
then the marble among We graves of the d
speak a solemn rebuke, . and stand the w
monument to perpetuate the character

The annual production of coal in China is es
timated at:MO-tons. ThiS statement will doubt
less surprise .'many in this country. who arc
badly aware of the existence there of the min
eral, much more of its extended consumption.—
BdE the supply is not greater is not owing
tol the poverty, of the mines but to the want of
'facilities for mining.
Therii - is another interesting statement in the
ptitler• of Dr. illacgowan, which • will excite the
astonishment of the American reader. This min
eral does not appear to have been known to En
x.xrpe more than three hundred years, yet Chinese
,antiquarians refer its use there to remote pe
kitidin their history. Its utility for the arts has
appreciated at Pekin for more a thou
'aatul-years, as may be inferred-from the ennead
-tuns bestowed upon it by a poet of the Sang dy
wholands it as used in the-Manufacture
!of 'iron implements. A writer in the early part
of the seventeenth century mentions the article.
' The earliest notice of coal is ilk the histiry of
the Han dynasty, 11. C. 202 to A. D. 25, where
;the remark occurs that Shins' produced stones
which were used as fuel. This carries back the
lust of coal to ,a remote antiquity, and adds ano
ther to the many important discoveries and in
ventions in which the Chinese home anticipated
!the "outer barbarians."
• .
These researches in regard to the coal fields of
China, 'are of much interest to this country,
where_ projects of steam communication between
Chiii and our Pacific coast are already matured.
Dr. Msegowsn, although an Englishman, recog
nises the transcendant importance'of these dis
coveries to America. Ile says:
"To appreciate rightly the value of those vast
Coal deposits, extending from Corea to Siam, re
gard must be had to the increasing commerce of
the Pacific, to the revolution which seems on the
eve of taking place in the route of communica
tion with the western notions, and to the prOspec
ties greatness of the Anglo-Saxon Staten spring
ing into existence on its eastern shores. Of their
capacity, aided by the applianceS of.forcign chili
