The Pope then washes his hands, and pre

moves forward, preceded by a cross veiled,
to denote the mourning of the Church in
the Passion Week. The Pope is seated in
,his splendid chair, which is trimmed with
rich crimson, gilded with gold, and elevated
upon the shoulders of twelve porters, all
richly clad, and over his lead is a rich ean

bearers, in the order of their rank. Ad
joining the Sistine Chapel is a large hall,
• called the salt, regia, or royal saloon. Into
this hall, which is lined with soldiery, the
procession advances, chanting and singing
- as they go; after they have passed the gate ,
of the chapel, they are closed, and the Pope,
with the procession, moves round the ball,
' returns to the door, and voices within and
without alternately answer to each other;
the sub-deacon strikes upon the dour with

thrown open, and the rd „p c, rat of God up

chanted with scores of veic-es, "When the

soldiers and people all dropping upon the

the chapel, descends from his throne, and
the whole ceremony closes by the celebra

DAME
HAPPINESS IN POVERTY, AFFLICTION AND
Dame C— could find no gratification
in the flower-garden: for twelve years she
had been totally blind; and she had lain
for full two years on a bed, where rheuma
tic affection of the lit nbs forbade her even
the luxury of changing her position, with
out an effort quite agonizing to her crippled
frame. I want to pirtray the family as I
found them, and shad) endeavor to de so.
On entering the little kitchen, the first
object that presented itself was the counte
nance of a boy, in the very lowest state of
confirmed idiotcy—his open mouth distort
ed into a wild' laugh, and disfigured by a
frightful scar, occasioned by his falling up
on a wood fire. This deplorable being sat
in a little chair; his long mis-shapen legs
and arms were alike powerless; and altoge
ther the first eight of him was enough to
check my wish for further acquaintance
with the cottagers. However, I proceeded,
and saw a very old man sitting near the
fire; while a middle-aged woman of a very
serious and even sad 4:enamor:et', respect- .
fully welcomed her visitor.
"Is this your little boy?" said I, trying
to reconcile myself to the specuttor. No,
madam, - he is a friendless child, east by the
Lord on such poor help u.S we ran give
him."
"Where is C C - ? "
"I will take yo t to her;" and then, with
great tenderness lifling the bey in her arms,
who at eight years old had the length (not
height, for he could not, stand) of ten or
twelve, she precedi.sl us into the adjoining;
room; which was in so dilapidated a state
that light penetrated the roof in many pla
tes, where the covering of turf had sunk in
between the open rafters, presenting an aS
, pent of great poverty, and accounting for
the rheumatic pains to which the inmate
was subject.
The dame lay on her very humble Lot
clean IA; and again I shrunk back. Her
face was drawn into innumerable wrinkles,
its expression indicatiog great s uff er in g , an d
r ; something about the eyelids that gave a
vague idea of the forcible extinction of
sight. he seemed a personification of mis
ery, and there was a heavy vacant look that
almost discouraged me from speaking to
her. Still I strove against the repugnant
feeling, and spoke gently and kindly, in
quiring how she felt herself.
"Very poorly, indeed, lady," she an
swered, without any movement; "my poor
bones ache so , that I can get no rest."
