THE WORLD I 8 satairr =sou THEE.
BY Yin Guam+ tIALLY.I.7K.
ne.world is bright before thee,
Its summer flowers are thine:
Its calm blue sky is o'er thee—
Thy . • bosom 'virtue's shrine:
thine the sunbeam given
To,nature's morning hour,
Pure, warm, as when, from heaven
It burst on Eden's bower.
There is a song of sorrow—
The death dirge of the gay—
That tells ere dawn of morrow
These charms may fade away
That son's bright beats he shaded,
- That sky be blue no more-
The summer flowers be faded,
, And youth's warm promise o'er
Relieve it not: though lonely
Thy evening home may be—
Thoughheanty's - bark can only
Float on a Bummer sea;
Though time thydiloom is stealing,
," There's still beyond his art.
The wild flower wreath of feeling—
The sunbeam of the heart.
SUMMATE Corns —On the recent OCea
-6:011 of . the recurrence of Washington's birth
day, ,Mr. Everett, of Massachn.tetts, spoke as.
‘Follotits.af the Supreme Court of the United
Stater; and its important functions. We may re
maik that 'nothing seems to have impressed De
Tocaneville more profoundly, in his examination
of our political system, than the grave dignity
of the Supreme Court of the United States, and
the implicit obedience with which powerful
States acquiteed in its decrees. Long may it
rennin to the Repnblic as the uncorrupted tem
ple ofjustice, the safeguard'of rights, the palla
dium of Freedom:
I do not know what others -"nay think on the
subject, for myself, (addressing Chancellor Wal
'worth, who sat near him,) I will soy, that if all
- the labors, the sacrifices, and the waste of
treasure and blethl, from the first landing at
J ames town o r Plymouth, were to give us noth
ing else but the Supreme Court of the United
.States--this reverend tribunal for the settlement
of international disputes, (for such it is)—l
should any the sacrifice was well made. I have
trodden, with emotion, the threshold of West
ninster Hall and the Palace of Justice in
France—l have thoughtith respect, of a long
line bf illustrious chancellors nod judges, sur
rounded with all the insignia of office, clothed
in seirlet dud ermine, who, within these splen
did, halls have, without fear or favor, adminis
tercel justice between powerful litigants. But it
Is 'with decrier emotions of reverence—it is
vith- somethirtg like awe—that I have entered
-the Supreme Court at Washington.
His not that I have heard those strains of
forensic eloquence, rarely equalled, never sue-
Tanned,. from the Wirts, the I'inkneys, and
-the Webs.ters; it is because I have seen there a
specimen 'of the perfection of the moral, sob
lime of human affairs. Front no low, dark
'bench, destitute of 01l the insignia of power,
froth the lips of some grave and venerable mag
istrate, to whom years and grey hairs would add
no new titles to respect, the laws of justice and
equity hos gone forth -to the most powerful
States of the Union, settling dangerous contro
versies, adjusting disputed boundaries, annul
ling unconstitutional laws, reversing erroneous
decisions, and with a few mild words of judicial
wisdom disposing of questions a hundred fold
more important than those which, within the
past year. from the plains of Holstein, have sha
ken the pillars of continental Europe, and all
bat brought a million of men into deadly con
filet with each other. But,, sir, when the Union
is broken,. when the States are separated, what
of your Supreme Court then? How are you to
settle great and difficult questions!
The St. Louis Republican tur. e letter from e
correspondent .a Rome, deturibing the Vatican.
The writer eays : _
This is probably the most interesting palace in
the world. It has been used for more than
thousand years, and how much longer is not cer
tainly known. •Charlemagne, it is said, resided
here at thetime he was crowned by Leo 3.1, in the
eighth century,. Its length is eleven hundred and
fiftyoone islilkok r and its breadth is FeVen
handrnd, 1 en feet. It has no regu
lariti architectural beauty to recom-
Mendlt,46l. . 'received many additions

say
,ofiti exterior Is, that it a huge pile. But
its museums of antiquities and of exquisite works
of net are unrivalled. The number of paintings,
frescoes, and mo s aics, to say nothing of the relics
of past ages that are garnered here, is almost
incredible. -No labor or expense has been spared
to make this the depository of everything that is
•
beautiful in art, or wonderful and interesting in
antiquity. It has four thousand four hundred
and twenty-two apartments, and one of these, the
Hall of the Candelabra, le one thousand feet long.
Not only are the walls of the various rooms cov
ered with paintings, but the ceiling overhead is
adorned with many of the finest frescoes in the
' world. Every scene, almost.. described in-the
Bible, you will find hero represented in tapestry,
mosaic, fresco. or oils. and . the historical events
of open, with the heroes of every age, and all the
mythological and allegorical figures of classic
lore, are all embodied before you.
In the Gallary Lapidaria, you almost feel that
you are walking through n cemetery. Embed
ded in the wall on the sides of the room, are all
the marble. inscriptions that have been removed
from the ruined tombs awl columbatia, to the
number of three thousand or more. •on one side
are the Pagan inscriptions, and on the other are
those of the early Christians, in Greek orLatin,
many of them originally : found in the eat
combo.
I was greatly interested in the hall of Bust. Here
I 'saw Alexander Stereos, Julius .Clesar, Atigus
tui,Marous;AgriPpa, Marcus Aurelius, Cato; Sep
timur Screens; Nero, Hadrian, Julia, the &wel
ter of Titus, &c.
In the Hall of the Greek Cross .are two sarco
phagi of great beauty. They are made of por
phyry, and are of immense size. One containing
the remains of St. Constantia, and ;the other 'the
Empress Helena.
The Library contains manuscripts. Greek,
Latin, - and Oriental, to t.he 'amount of twenty
three thousand five huntlebel and eighty. There
is no other such collection in the world. The
number of printed books isouly thirty thousand.
Among the treasures of the-Library is a Virgil of
.the-itheentnry, with it portrait of Virgil himself;
a large Hebrew Bible, in folio, for which the
Jews of Venice once offered its weight in gold;
seventeen letters of Henry the Eighth to Anne
Boleyn, nine in French, and eight in English:
several manuscripts of Luther, and numberless
other literary curiosities.
The Capitol contains many very fine works of
art.
Here is the celebrated Dying Gladiator. It is
a master-piece of statuary. 'I noticed also a
mosaic, called "Pliny's Doves," one of the finest
speeitiens of ancient mosaic. It represents four'
doves, drinking; and is composed of natural
stones of such extreme minuteness that seven hun
dred and sixty are contained in a square inch.
Here, among the busts, I saw Titus, Julien the
apostate, Aptoainns Tins, Plotina, the wife of
Trtuan, and Julia Sabina, the wife of Hadrian ;
also, Virgil, Cicero, Socrates, Seneca, Dingenes.
Pythagorna, Demosthenes, Homer, Sappho, and
many other distinguished cb&tsetees.
The HolrSepulelre.
A projtxt is on foot among the Catholic
powers of Europe, which we .should hardly
deem credible, were it not related on the
authority of the London Times. It amounts
to a revival of one of the institutions of the
Middle Ages—one that the civilized world
has certainly considered irreclaimably obso
lete L--a scheme for the recovery of Jerusa
lem and the Holy Sepulchre from the Mo
hammedans. According to the correspond
cat of the Times, the purpose of the cru
sades is to be revived ; hut it is to he pur
sued by the way of diplomacy, not by war.
It is stated that the Catholic powers,. with
tho connivance of Austria; intend to obtain
possession, (it is not precisely defined bow,)
of all the sacred spots of the Holy land,
which will then be made over to the Cath
. olic Church. The Order of the Holy Sep
re ulch will be raised to the importance
,
once possessed by the Knights Templars.
The Pope is to be the Grand Master, and
one 'Prince of every Catholic State of Eu
rope is to be created Grand Prior. The
movement, as far is it canbe called one, is
probably caused by the increasing influence
of the Greek Church in the East, under the
support of.-Russia. That Church, too, has
made the possession of the-Holy Sepulchr
special object of its ambition, as well as
other localities in Syria, sacred by their
astOciations; During the two past years,
while the political power of the Papal Gov
ernment wasp rostrated, the efforts of the
inht . sionaries and agents of the Greek Church
are Said to have made great progress, and
are gradually sapping the influence of the
Latin Church. The feuds between the' two
ChurChes have tong been of the most bitter
kind, and itrStrttsalem, it is well known,.!
have grown to a scandalous excess; a guard
of Turkish soldiers alone keeps peace is. '
tween them at certain festivals in the
Church of the Sepulchre.
The Times inks thol the predominance
of the Greek CI urch at Jerusalem will lead
Russia to int& .re against this movement,
'and that the 0 tholic powers will succumb
to the, comma ds of St. l'etersburgh.—
