Winfield Scott is descended from a Scotch an

slain on the field of Culloden—being involved in

A restlectalile marriage, and eminence at the bar,
however, soon restored his fortunes. Ile died at
an early age, but the germ hulauted flourished
in that geuerous soil. this son Wiliam macried
Ann Mason, a gifted and noble woman; and their
youngest child is the subject of this sketch. The
death of his father; during the infancy of Win
field. devolved the education of the family on
Mrs. Scott, who discharged her trust with chrls

the bar in 1500 and began the practice of law.

transferred to the camp at New Orleans. A free
expression of opinion on the conduct of his Into
